"1 dead, Iran says" at UPI; CNBC cites the naval monitors and gives no toll at all
Three reports on one ship attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. UPI counts a death and hands the number to Tehran. CNBC counts nobody and measures the strike against a signing due in Oman. Ynet names the commander who gave the order, on a New York Times account we do not hold.
One ship, three answers. A commercial vessel was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday 13 September. We hold three reports on it. They do not agree on how many were hurt, on who attacked, or on what the attack was about.
| Report | Who it cites | Casualties | Who attacked |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | Iran | 1 dead, 4 injured | not named — "was attacked" |
| CNBC | the naval monitoring body | none given | not named — "struck" |
| Ynet | the New York Times | none given | Hossein Taeb, new Basij commander |
The toll belongs to one government. UPI puts "Iran says" in its headline, then states the figures flat in its text. CNBC gives no figure at all — a silence, not a contradiction. Nobody killed or injured is named. Neither is the ship.
Two of the three write the attacker out. In UPI and CNBC there is no actor: a vessel was struck. Ynet alone names a person, and rests that on a US newspaper rather than on anyone speaking. In that account President Masoud Pezeshkian demanded answers from the Revolutionary Guard commander, who said he had not known in advance either.
Not settled. Whether Ynet describes this same attack: nothing we hold links them. The toll has one source and no corroboration. The Oman signing is in CNBC alone, with no date. No crew, no shipowner and no cargo owner is quoted anywhere.
What this is about. Ships are being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the sea lane off Iran's coast that carries a large share of the world's oil. Iran is in open conflict with the United States.
How it got here. - 1979 onward. Iran's Islamic Republic and the United States have been adversaries since the revolution. Much of the dispute is about Iran's nuclear programme. - 7 October 2023. Hamas attacked Israel, and the Gaza war followed. Iran and Israel then struck each other directly. The United States was drawn in through its commitments to Israel. - June 2025. Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran. The United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. A ceasefire followed after 12 days. - This September. The fighting has resumed. Outlets disagree on what to call it. Anadolu and Wyborcza write of an Iran-US war. Gulf News reports that Trump denies it is one. On 8 September, Trump and Iran's Mohsen Rezaei gave very different counts of how many ships get through the strait. By 10 September the dispute had gone to the UN Security Council.
The actors. - Iran borders the strait. Its elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, took office in 2024. Its armed forces include the Revolutionary Guard, which answers to the Supreme Leader rather than to the president. The Basij, a volunteer militia, sits under the Guard. Hossein Taeb, named by Ynet, ran the Guard's intelligence arm until 2022. - The United States is Iran's main opponent in this conflict. - Oman faces Iran across the strait. It has long carried messages between Tehran and Washington. - The Gulf states ship most of their oil and gas through the strait. - UKMTO, a centre run by Britain's Royal Navy, collects reports of incidents from ships.
What is at stake. Shipping in the strait keeps oil and gas moving to world markets. If the attacks go on, that trade is at risk. If Iran signs a shipping agreement with the Gulf states, the route may reopen. The attack also raises a question about Iran: whether its elected government controls the forces that fire on ships.
Where it stands. A commercial ship was hit on 13 September. CNBC reports that Iranian and Gulf officials were expected to sign a shipping agreement in Oman, and gives no date. We hold no report saying it has been signed.

What is being argued about
- Who was killed or hurt when a commercial ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, and whose count that is
- Whether any report names an attacker, or leaves the ship simply struck
- The meeting in Oman where Iranian and Gulf officials were expected to sign a shipping agreement
- An order attributed to one Iranian commander, and a president who says he was not told
