Gazeta Wyborcza says the BRICS text condemns the US war with Iran; Digi24 says it urges "maximum restraint"
Eleven states adopted one declaration in New Delhi on Saturday. Two reports describe its line on the war and they do not match. The six that set out what the document says quote other paragraphs.
Two reports, two documents. Digi24, citing AFP, says the joint declaration adopted on Saturday, the summit's first day, urges the parties in the Middle East conflict to show "maximum restraint". Gazeta Wyborcza, citing Reuters, says the annual meeting of the 11-state bloc will end with a declaration condemning the war of the United States with Iran. The second is written in the future tense, before the text was out.
| Outlet | On the war | Names the United States |
|---|---|---|
| Digi24, citing AFP | "maximum restraint", asked of the parties | No |
| Gazeta Wyborcza, citing Reuters | a declaration "condemning the US war with Iran" | Yes |
| TASS, Interfax, IRNA, Vedomosti, Espreso TV | nothing on the declaration and the war | No |
What the rest set out. Six of the 11 reports say what the declaration contains: global economic governance as "a consistent BRICS priority", communications technology, the blockade of Cuba, artificial intelligence, China's 2027 chairmanship. None touches the Middle East. In the Cuba passage the blockade tightens with no state named as tightening it.
Not settled. No report we hold quotes the declaration's clause on the war. One carries the restraint wording, one predicts a condemnation, and nothing corroborates either. None quotes a leader or a country objecting to the text. Espreso TV alone carries Putin saying European troops in Ukraine would mean war with Russia, sourced to The Moscow Times — uncontradicted and unconfirmed by anything else we hold.
What this is about: a group of large non-Western economies met in India. The question is whether its joint text takes a side in the war between the United States and Iran.
How it got here - BRICS began in 2009 as a club of Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2010. It was set up to give big emerging economies a voice outside Western-led bodies such as the G7, the IMF and the World Bank. - It grew in 2024 and 2025. Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia joined. The reports describe it as an 11-state bloc. - BRICS decides by consensus. A declaration says only what every member accepts, so its wording shows where the members agree. - In June 2025, Israel and Iran fought an air war, and the United States struck Iranian nuclear sites. This month our coverage has followed fighting between the United States and Iran. That includes rival claims about shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane out of the Gulf, and a move to take the matter to the UN Security Council. Even the name is disputed: Gulf News reported Trump denying that it is a war.
The actors - Iran is a BRICS member at war with the United States. It wants the bloc on its side. - India holds the chair and hosts the summit. It has close ties to both Washington and Tehran. - Russia and China often use BRICS to push back against US power. Russia is also fighting in Ukraine, which it invaded in February 2022. - The UAE and Egypt are Gulf and Arab states with close security ties to the US.
What is at stake: if the text names the United States, a bloc that includes several US partners has taken Iran's side. If it only asks both sides for restraint, Iran got no more from its own bloc than a general call for calm.
Where it stands: the declaration was adopted on 12 September. China takes the chair in 2027. No report we hold quotes the clause on the war.

What is being argued about
- What the New Delhi declaration says about the war between the United States and Iran
- One account of the Middle East wording, and nothing to check it against
- What the declaration is quoted on instead: economic governance, Cuba, technology, China's 2027 chair
- Putin on European troops in Ukraine, carried by one report at second hand
