Al Jazeera says 20 dead and "Israel-hit"; the Jerusalem Post says 16 and "war-damaged"
A multi-storey building people were sheltering in came down overnight in Gaza City. Four reports, two tolls, four different words for what brought it down — and not one name among the dead.
The collapse. A multi-storey apartment building came down overnight in Gaza City. Rescuers were still searching the rubble when all four reports we hold were published on Wednesday.
The toll. Three reports say at least 20 died. One says 16, and marks the figure "- report". None names the body that counted the dead.
| Report | Dead | Why it fell | Actor named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera, 12:32 | at least 20 | "a damaged apartment building" | none |
| Al Jazeera, 12:56 | 20, "including women and children" | "Israel-hit building" | Israel |
| UN News, 12:00 | at least 20, "according to reports" | "a bombed-out building" | none |
| The Jerusalem Post, 13:27 | 16 | "war-damaged" | none |
The wording. Four words for one cause: damaged, Israel-hit, bombed-out, war-damaged. One report names who did the damaging. None dates the strike.
Who gets doubted. The only named voice across the four is Raed al-Dahshan, director of Gaza City's civil defence service, who put at least 10 families in the building. The report carrying him writes that he "claimed". Tolls elsewhere are given flat, or "according to reports".
Not settled. Whether the count is 16 or 20, and what each number counts. Who struck the building, and when. How many people were inside. No report names anyone who died, and none quotes a survivor or a relative. We hold no Palestinian outlet on this collapse.
What this is about. A building in Gaza City that people were sheltering in came down overnight, and the reports we hold disagree on how many died and on what brought it down.
How it got here. Gaza is a narrow coastal strip, home to about two million Palestinians, governed by Hamas since 2007 and under Israeli and Egyptian blockade since then. On 7 October 2023 Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, killing and seizing hostages. Israel answered with a war in Gaza — air strikes, then ground operations — that has run for close to three years and has wrecked much of Gaza City. That history is why a collapse is not a simple accident here. Buildings hit by strikes are often left standing but unsound, and families displaced again and again shelter inside them because there is nowhere else to go. When one of those buildings finally falls, it sits between two categories — a death in the war, or a structure giving way — and the choice of word decides which.
Who is in it. Israel's military, which has conducted the strikes. Hamas, which governs Gaza and against which the war is fought. Gaza's civil defence, the local rescue service that digs through rubble; its Gaza City director, Raed al-Dahshan, is the only person named in any of the four reports. UN agencies, which report on conditions in Gaza. Foreign press access to Gaza is restricted, so most reporting is filed from outside it.
What is at stake. Whether deaths like these enter the war's toll at all, and who is recorded as having caused them. Those counts feed the international cases and inquiries arising from the war, and our earlier coverage on this thread has repeatedly found outlets splitting over the same question — "accuses Israel of war crimes" against "possible war crimes", on 15 September.
Where it stands. Rescuers were still searching the rubble on Wednesday. No report names anyone who died.

What is being argued about
- Sixteen dead or at least 20, and what each figure counts
- What brought the building down, and whether anyone is named for it
- Which accounts are stated flat and which are hedged or doubted
- Nobody named among the dead, and no survivor quoted
