Arab Parliament says Houthi missiles hit three Saudi cities; IRNA reports only Saudi jets bombing Marib
We hold 11 reports from six outlets on 15 September. Which side is striking depends on which one you read. Two reports from the same outlet disagree on whether the Houthis hold Bab el-Mandeb.
What is claimed. The Arab Parliament and the Muslim World League say Houthi ballistic missiles and drones hit Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif and injured "several civilians". Asharq Al-Awsat carries both statements. Each takes the claim from the Saudi Press Agency, so it is one account. IRNA says Saudi jets "bombed north and west of Marib province". Neither claim is independently established.
Who each outlet says is striking
| Outlet | Who strikes | Word for the Houthis |
|---|---|---|
| Asharq Al-Awsat (two statements) | Houthis, on Saudi cities | "terrorist Houthi militia", from the statements |
| Asharq Al-Awsat (Egypt) | no attacker named | none |
| IRNA | Saudi jets, on Marib | none in the line we hold |
| JNS | Houthis, on the strait | "terror group", in its own voice |
| Ynet | Houthis, at Mecca | "rebels" |
The strait. One JNS report says the Houthis "seized control" of Bab el-Mandeb. Another JNS headline says they "are coming for" it. The Jerusalem Post says they are "rapidly advancing" and quotes an unnamed Yemeni officer: "The battle is not over yet."
Israel. Only the Jerusalem Post reports that Riyadh asked Israel for intelligence help. It names no source.
Not settled - Whether the strait has changed hands. - How many were hurt. No report gives a number for the Saudi cities, and IRNA's line says nothing about Marib. - Whether Israel is helping. - We hold no report from a Yemeni outlet and no Houthi statement on the strikes.
What this is about. A war inside Yemen has spilled into Saudi Arabia and onto one of the world's main shipping lanes.
How it got here - 2014: The Houthis are an armed movement from Yemen's north. Its formal name is Ansar Allah. In September 2014 it seized the capital, Sanaa, and drove out the internationally recognised government. - March 2015: Saudi Arabia led a coalition of Arab states into the war to restore that government. It bombed Houthi areas for years. The Houthis fired missiles and drones into Saudi Arabia in return. - April 2022: A UN-brokered truce largely stopped cross-border fire between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The war inside Yemen was frozen but never ended. - From late 2023: During the Gaza war, the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea. The US and Israel struck Yemen in return. - September 2026: Fighting on Yemen's Red Sea coast restarted. On 10 September The Jerusalem Post reported that the Houthis had taken the port of Mocha. Since then, reports have disagreed about how far they have got. On 12 September Riyadh said drones fired at it had come from Iraq.
Who is involved, and why - The Houthis hold most of Yemen's population, including Sanaa. - Yemen's recognised government holds the south and the east, including Marib. Marib is an oil and gas province. - Saudi Arabia shares a long border with Yemen. It treats the Houthis as a threat on that border. - Iran backs the Houthis politically. Western and Gulf governments say it also arms them. Tehran denies directing them. - The Arab Parliament belongs to the Arab League. The Muslim World League is based in Mecca and funded by Saudi Arabia.
What is at stake. The Bab el-Mandeb strait separates Yemen from Djibouti and Eritrea. It connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Ships travelling between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal pass through it. If one armed group controls both of its shores, it can threaten that route. A new cross-border war would also end the truce that has held since 2022.
Where it stands. JNS reports that France has asked the UN Security Council for a briefing. Ynet says the UN puts the number of newly displaced at 100,000. Nobody has independently confirmed who controls the strait.
