Riyadh says drones came from Iraq; Trump says Iran was "probably" behind it; nobody has claimed the pipeline attack
Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry says several drones were launched from Iraq at the East-West oil pipeline. The US president says Iran was likely responsible. No party has claimed the attack, no report we hold counts the injured, and the line to the Red Sea is still shut.
What is agreed. The East-West pipeline carries Saudi crude overland to the Red Sea. It was struck on the morning of Thursday 10 September in the Riyadh and Madinah regions. An-Nahar reports the line was still halted on Saturday as a precaution while technical teams check it, with no date named to restart it.
Who fired. Nobody has claimed the attack in any report we hold.
| Who is speaking | What they say | Who they name |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi foreign ministry, in Asharq Al-Awsat | "several drones launched from Iraq", "injuries and some damage" | nobody — the drones act |
| GCC secretary-general, in Asharq Al-Awsat | "casualties and material damage", "a flagrant violation" of international law | nobody |
| Donald Trump, in The Jerusalem Post and Al Jazeera | Iran "likely", then "probably", behind it | Iran, hedged twice |
| Saudi energy ministry, in An-Nahar | the statement "did not include any attribution of responsibility" | nobody, and it says so |
The people hurt. Four reports say there were injuries or casualties. Not one gives a number, a name or a condition. An-Nahar makes the missing count the finding: the statement gave neither the nature of the strikes, nor the damage, nor how many were hurt.
Not settled. Who launched the drones, and on whose orders. Whether anyone was killed. When the line runs again. S&P affirmed Saudi Arabia at A+, stable outlook, on Saturday — citing the ability to send crude to the Red Sea through this pipeline, the morning the ministry would not say when it reopens.
What this is about. Someone attacked Saudi Arabia's main overland oil pipeline with drones. Saudi Arabia has kept exporting through the war in the Gulf largely because of that pipeline.
How it got here. - Most Gulf oil normally leaves by sea through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow channel between Iran and Oman. Saudi Arabia built the East-West pipeline in the 1980s, during the Iran-Iraq war, so it could ship crude from the Gulf coast to the Red Sea without using the strait. - The region has been escalating since the Gaza war that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. Israel and Iran exchanged direct strikes in 2024, and in June 2025 the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. - In 2019 drones hit Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq oil plant. The Houthis claimed that attack; Washington and Riyadh blamed Iran; Iran denied it. - This year, Al-Modon reports, Hormuz was closed to crude exports. Citing the Wall Street Journal, it says the pipeline can carry up to 7 million barrels a day over about 750 miles to the port of Yanbu. The IEA links a fall in Saudi supply to attacks on ships in Bab al-Mandab and near Yanbu, on the Jazan refinery and on Abqaiq, An-Nahar reports.
The actors. - Saudi Arabia owns the line. - Iraq, where Riyadh says the drones were launched, has a government in Baghdad and armed groups that operate beside the state. Some of these groups are aligned with Iran. - Iran is the country the US president names. - Yemen's Houthis, who have been at war with a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, have gained ground on the Red Sea coast, according to our earlier reports. - The GCC is the bloc of six Gulf monarchies founded in 1981.
What is at stake. Losing this route would cut off Saudi Arabia's main way of getting crude to market while the strait is closed. The IEA puts Saudi supply in August at 6 million barrels a day, its lowest in more than three decades, An-Nahar reports.
Where it stands. Riyadh says it will not retaliate for now, at the request of Iraq's prime minister. Iraq has opened an investigation, Al-Modon reports. The line is still shut.

What is being argued about
- Who fired the drones, and from where — Riyadh names a launch country but no sender, and Trump names Iran with a hedge
- How many people were hurt: four reports say there were injuries, none counts them
- Whether shutting Saudi Arabia's overland route to the Red Sea moves oil supply
- Lebanon, Turkey and Qatar responding while Iraq is asked to act on its own territory
