Unnamed officials say Iran is building missiles again; Shargh reports only Trump's anger at the claim
One report says US and Middle East officials told the Wall Street Journal that Iran has restarted missile production underground. Another carries only Trump's anger at the question. None carries Iran's answer.
What is claimed. Iran has resumed building ballistic missiles in underground sites from stockpiled components, US and Middle East officials said, according to Asharq Al-Awsat. The officials spoke to The Wall Street Journal. None is named. Asharq Al-Awsat says the work covers liquid-propellant missiles, fuelled just before launch, and solid-propellant missiles, which can be stored ready to fire.
What else is reported. Shargh, an Iranian daily, reports that Trump grew angry when reporters at Dulles airport asked him about the Journal's report on Iran. It does not print his words. The Jerusalem Post states, with no source, that the US has blocked China from rapidly resupplying Iran's missile materials.

How it is told. Asharq Al-Awsat's headline hedges with "reportedly". Its first sentence states the restart flat and names who says so only at the end. It describes "heavy attacks" on Iran's missile sites without naming who carried them out.
What is not settled. - Whether production has restarted. No named source says so, and we do not hold the Journal's own report. - What Trump said. Shargh gives his mood, not his words. - Iran's answer. None of the 3 reports carries an Iranian confirmation or denial. - Whether a Chinese supply block exists, and who says it does.
What this is about. Whether Iran is rebuilding its ballistic missiles, which are its main way of striking Israel and US bases in the region, while a war with them goes on.
How it got here. - Iran and Israel have been enemies since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. For decades they fought mostly through proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. - In 2015, Iran agreed a nuclear deal with world powers that limited its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief. The United States left the deal in 2018, during Donald Trump's first term. - After the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, Iran and Israel began striking each other directly. Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel in April and October 2024. - In June 2025, Israel bombed Iranian nuclear and military sites. The United States then struck three nuclear sites. A ceasefire followed after twelve days. - Asharq Al-Awsat's report refers to "heavy attacks" on Iran's missile and industrial sites in "the initial phase of the war" now under way. We do not hold a report that dates the start of that war.
The actors. - Iran calls its missiles defensive, and they are the core of its deterrent. - Israel treats them as a direct threat to its cities. - The United States under President Trump, back in office since January 2025, is Israel's main ally and has forces across the Gulf. - China buys Iranian oil. The Jerusalem Post says, without a source, that the US has blocked China from resupplying Iran's missile materials.
What is at stake. If Iran can build missiles again from stockpiled parts in underground sites, the strikes did not end its ability to hit back, and the case for more strikes gets stronger. If it cannot, that ability is shrinking.
Where it stands. Our earlier coverage this month carried an Israeli threat against Iran's energy sites, a US drone reported destroyed near the Strait of Hormuz, and Iranian diplomacy with the states along that shipping lane. Whether missile production has restarted rests on officials who are not named. None of the reports we hold carries Iran's answer.
