LBCI: the border shut after drone launch sites were found. Baghdad: the closures are "temporary" and "organisational"
Iraq closed crossings with Iran hours after drones hit a Saudi oil pipeline, and sacked its Maysan commanders. Four reports give four reasons for the same closed gate; the official one is the only reason with a name attached to it.
Agreed. Drones hit Saudi Arabia's east–west oil pipeline on Thursday; Riyadh and Baghdad both say they flew from Iraqi soil. On Saturday Iraq shut crossings with Iran, and Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi sacked Maysan's operations commander and police chief.
Why the gates shut — four answers in one day
| Outlet | The reason given | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar | an intelligence effort to track the culprits and block drone smuggling | an unnamed Iraqi security source |
| The Jerusalem Post | "a precautionary measure after the drone attacks" | two security sources, via Reuters |
| LBCI | the Tayyib area shut after drone launch sites were found | two Iraqi military sources, via Reuters |
| Shargh | "temporary", for "reorganisation and preparation" | Omar al-Waeli of Iraq's border authority, named |
How many. An-Nahar names three — Shalamcheh in Basra, Sheeb in Maysan, Mandali in Diyala — and says the rest stayed open. The Jerusalem Post names Shalamcheh alone. Shargh, from the Iranian side, has Shalamcheh shut and Chazabeh reopened to Iraqi nationals hours later.
Not settled. Nobody has claimed the attack. The factions in the Islamic Resistance in Iraq deny it, and that denial reaches 1 of the 9 reports we hold. None of the nine quotes a named person from the factions or from Tehran; 4 quote a named Iraqi official. No report says whether anyone in Saudi Arabia was hurt. Baghdad says it accepted an Iranian request for a joint inquiry into launch pads on the border — carried by LBCI alone.
What this is about: someone launched drones from Iraq at Saudi Arabia's main oil pipeline, and Iraq's government is trying to show it can control its own territory and its border with Iran.
How it got here
- 2003–2014. The US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein. Since then Iraq has been governed by Shia-led coalitions with close ties to both Washington and Tehran.
- 2014. Armed groups mobilised to fight the Islamic State. Many are backed by Iran. They became the Popular Mobilisation Forces, which Iraqi law made part of the state's forces in 2016. Several of those groups still answer to their own commanders.
- Late 2023. After the Gaza war began, some of these groups started claiming attacks under the name "Islamic Resistance in Iraq".
- February 2026. War broke out between Iran and the United States, An-Nahar reports. Since then Saudi Arabia has accused Iraqi factions of attacks on its territory.
- Late July. US and Saudi strikes hit Popular Mobilisation headquarters across Iraq, killing at least 20 people, five of them Iranians, An-Nahar reports.
- This month. We have reported fighting over shipping lanes in and around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
Who is involved, and why
- Saudi Arabia. Its east–west pipeline carries crude from the Gulf coast to the Red Sea. That route lets its oil avoid Hormuz. Riyadh has halted the pipeline and says it will not respond "at this stage" while Baghdad acts.
- Iraq's government, under Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi. It is under US pressure to disarm the factions, and it needs good relations with Iran, its neighbour.
- The factions. They deny the attack.
- Iran. It shares the border and has asked for a joint inquiry. Pilgrims and trade cross that border every day.
- The United States. President Trump has said Iran was "probably" behind the attack.
What is at stake. If Baghdad cannot stop launches from its soil, Saudi Arabia's restraint may end. That would pull Iraq further into a war it says it wants no part of. Closing the border cuts off trade and pilgrims, and Iraq cannot easily afford that.
Where it stands. Nobody has claimed the attack. Some crossings are shut, and Baghdad calls the closures temporary.

What is being argued about
- Why Iraq shut crossings with Iran — a hunt for the drone crews, or reorganisation
- How many crossings closed, which ones, and when they reopened
- The sacking of the Maysan operations commander and police chief, and the officer named to replace him
- Who launched the drones, and who has answered for it
