Trump says America controls Hormuz, Asharq Al-Awsat says Iran has it blockaded, Bahrain says it will not sit down
Iran and Gulf states meet in Oman on Monday over the Strait of Hormuz. Four reports carry Bahrain's refusal to attend, two call the waterway blockaded in the outlet's own voice, and none carries Iran's account of the closure.
The meeting. Iran's foreign ministry says it will meet Gulf states in Oman on Monday over the Strait of Hormuz, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, with "Iraq and other littoral Persian Gulf states" attending. Al-Monitor carries a senior Iranian official, unnamed, saying Monday will not produce a signed agreement. Oman holds the opposite bank and says other Gulf states back its track.
Bahrain. Four reports carry the Bahraini foreign ministry: the kingdom will join no collective meeting with Iran before diplomatic relations resume, and told Muscat so through official channels. It cites the attack on Saudi Arabia's east–west oil pipeline without naming whom it accuses, and says any navigation arrangement must rest on the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Who holds the water.
| Who | On the strait | In whose voice |
|---|---|---|
| Trump, in LBCI | the US controls Hormuz and has cleared its sea mines | his words as the whole headline, nothing against them |
| Trump, in Shargh | the same words | marked "he claimed", and called impudent |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | "which the Islamic republic has blockaded" | the outlet's own, unattributed |
| Al-Monitor | "the blockaded waterway" | the outlet's own, unattributed |
| Pezeshkian, in Asharq Al-Awsat | the region needs no "regional policeman" | a plain "said" |
Not settled. Who holds the waterway. Whether Monday puts anything on paper: the only account of the outcome is one unnamed Iranian official. No report we hold gives Iran's account of the closure or its terms, and none carries a denial. Nobody publishes an agenda.
What this is about. Who controls the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane out of the Persian Gulf, during a war between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other.
How it got here. - Iran and Israel have been enemies since Iran's 1979 revolution. After the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, the two states struck each other directly for the first time, in April and October 2024. - In June 2025 they fought a short war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. - On 28 February 2026, US-Israeli strikes killed Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, Asharq Al-Awsat reports. Iran has been at war since then and has struck back across the region. - Since then, who holds the strait has been in dispute. For months Iran has been negotiating with Oman over a deal on passage through it, Al-Monitor reports.
Who is involved, and why. - Iran holds the northern shore. Its president, Masoud Pezeshkian, took office in 2024. - Oman holds the southern shore. It has long carried messages between Iran and the West. - The United States, under President Donald Trump, is at war with Iran. Its navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain. - Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016, after a crowd stormed Saudi Arabia's embassy in Tehran. - Saudi Arabia's east–west pipeline carries oil to the Red Sea, bypassing Hormuz. Drones hit it this month. Riyadh says they came from Iraq, and nobody has claimed the attack. - Iraq exports its oil through the Gulf and is invited to Monday's meeting.
What is at stake. - Oil and trade. Much of the Gulf's oil and gas has no other route out. Trump says oil prices will fall once the war ends. - The law. The 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea guarantees ships passage through straits like this one. Iran signed it but never ratified it. The United States never joined it. - Who guards the Gulf. Iran says the countries of the region should do it. The United States has kept a navy there for decades.
Where it stands. Iran and some Gulf states meet in Oman on Monday. Bahrain will not attend. An unnamed Iranian official told Al-Monitor that nothing will be signed. Trump says the war will end after the US midterm elections in November.
