The Jerusalem Post says the next round moves to Washington; Aoun says there is "no new round of negotiations at present"
Ten reports, one day. One puts the next Israel–Lebanon round in Washington on the US State Department's word; two say the Rome round has slipped to October and name nobody; Lebanon's president says from Nabatieh that no round is under way.
One day, three accounts. Every report we hold on this was published on 12 September. They do not describe the same negotiation.
| What it says about the next round | Outlets | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| Moves to Washington instead of Rome | The Jerusalem Post | the US State Department, named |
| The Rome round is postponed to October | Haaretz, Asharq Al-Awsat | "reports", nobody named |
| There is no new round at present | Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Modon, Haaretz | President Joseph Aoun, quoted by name |
Seven of the ten reports are the same trip. Aoun's unannounced visit to Nabatieh and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, travelling with army commander Rodolphe Haykal. LBCI carries his line that Israel's withdrawal, the return of prisoners and of the displaced, and reconstruction are commitments the state will meet. Al-Modon, alone, says the visit "did not break the ice" with southerners — a verdict in the outlet's own voice, with no resident quoted.
One side is quoted; the other is a source. No Israeli official is quoted by name in any of the ten. The only description of the talks' tone — "positive" — comes from an unnamed source to the Jerusalem Post.
Not settled: whether a round is scheduled at all, and if so where and when. The Jerusalem Post alone dates the first round to Rome on 4 August; no other report we hold carries that, and none contradicts it. Nobody living in Nabatieh speaks in any report we hold.
What this is about: whether Israel and Lebanon are negotiating directly, and on what terms. The two countries have no diplomatic relations. They have been formally at war since 1948.
How it got here
- 1982–2000. Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982. Hezbollah, a Shia armed movement and political party backed by Iran, formed during that occupation. Israel held a strip of south Lebanon until 2000.
- 2006. Israel and Hezbollah fought a war. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 ended it and expanded UNIFIL, the UN force in the south.
- October 2023. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October and Israel went to war in Gaza. On 8 October Hezbollah began firing on northern Israel in support of Gaza. Israel struck back.
- Autumn 2024. Israel escalated, killed Hezbollah's leadership and sent ground troops into the south. A ceasefire brokered by the US and France took effect on 27 November 2024. It required Hezbollah to pull back and Israel to withdraw. Each side has accused the other of breaking it.
- 2025. Joseph Aoun, the former army commander, became president in January. Washington and Israel have pressed for Hezbollah to be disarmed. Hezbollah has refused.
- 2026. The Jerusalem Post reports that the two countries signed a framework agreement after US-mediated talks on 27 June, and that a first round opened in Rome on 4 August. In early September, Israel's military said it had taken the Ali al-Taher ridge near Nabatieh. Asharq Al-Awsat says the ridge was taken from Hezbollah and blown up.
Who is involved
- Israel wants its northern border secure and Hezbollah disarmed.
- Lebanon's state (President Aoun and army commander Rodolphe Haykal) lists four demands: Israeli withdrawal, the return of prisoners, the return of the displaced, and reconstruction.
- Hezbollah is not at the table. Many of its supporters live in the south.
- The United States is the mediator. We do not hold enough reporting to say whether Iran's standoff with Israel and Washington is connected to these talks.
What is at stake: a negotiated Israeli withdrawal and the return of southerners to their homes, or more fighting in the south.
Where it stands: reports disagree on whether another round is scheduled at all, and if so where and when.
The story so far

- Unnamed officials say Iran is building missiles again; Shargh reports only Trump's anger at the claim · 11 Sep 2026
- Israel's army calls the Ali al-Taher ridge "a sandbox"; an Al-Modon headline calls it a Hezbollah "successful withdrawal" · 11 Sep 2026
- Jerusalem Post says Katz threatened Iran's energy sites; Shargh says they "may be" on the target list · 10 Sep 2026
- Ynet has Netanyahu "very close" to deciding the regime in Iran; LBCI has him "committed to bringing down the terror regime" · 9 Sep 2026
- LBCI and An-Nahar lead on "hundreds detained"; Al-Monitor on operations "increasingly sustained and entrenched" · 8 Sep 2026
- Shargh says a US drone was destroyed "over the Strait of Hormuz"; LBCI, citing Reuters, says over Bandar Abbas, and no American confirmation · 8 Sep 2026
- Israel's military says it took the Ali Taher Ridge. The one Lebanese account we hold is two days older and names no ridge. · 4 Sep 2026

What is being argued about
- Where the next Israel–Lebanon round meets — Washington, Rome in October, or nowhere
- President Joseph Aoun's unannounced visit to Nabatieh and what he committed the state to there
- A named US department on one side of the disagreement, unnamed "reports" on the other
- Southerners described in every report on the visit and quoted in none
