Guardian names Taylor Farms lettuce as the source; Independent headline says origin of 13,000 cases 'still unknown'

US officials declared the largest recorded cyclospora outbreak over on Friday. Three reports give three case figures. Only one headline says the source is unknown, and that report's own text names the company.

The outbreak is over. US health officials declared it ended on Friday, The Guardian and The Independent report. Both call it the largest of its kind on US record. Both link it to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, grown in central Mexico.

The count changes from report to report.

Outlet Outbreak cases Deaths Hospitalised Company named
The Guardian 12,882 (standfirst), 12,883 (text) 2 570 Yes
The Independent "nearly 13,000"; "13,000" in headline 2, both in Michigan not given Yes
Anadolu Agency not given not given not given No

What "unknown" means. The Independent's headline says the origin is "still unknown". Its text says Taylor Farms "was identified as the source" and recalled the lettuce. What is not known is how the parasite got into the crop. The paper says it "still is not clear how sewage could have contaminated enough food".

A second count. The Independent also reports nearly 20,000 lab-confirmed cases since May 1. That figure counts every case this year, not only the outbreak. The paper says thousands of them are not linked to the lettuce.

Not settled: - How the lettuce was contaminated. The FDA says samples from its inspections in Mexico have not yet been analysed, The Independent reports. - Who the two people who died were. No report we hold names them. - What Taylor Farms says. No report we hold quotes the company. - We hold only one line from Anadolu Agency, so we cannot say what the rest of its report carries.

What this is about: a stomach parasite that reached US diners through imported lettuce. The outbreak is over, but how the crop was contaminated is still not known.

The parasite. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite. It spreads through human faeces, usually when produce touches contaminated soil or water. It causes watery diarrhoea. Cases peak in late spring and summer. They are rarer than salmonella or E. coli, and many are never traced to a food, The Independent reports. Cooking kills it. Salad is eaten raw, which is why leafy greens and fresh herbs keep turning up in these outbreaks.

Who does what. Two federal agencies share the job: - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counts cases and decides when an outbreak starts and ends. - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates most of the food supply. It traces food back to farms, inspects them and oversees recalls.

For imported food, the FDA relies on inspections abroad. The Independent reports that the agency now carries out fewer of them.

Why Mexico and why one company. Much of the fresh produce Americans eat is grown in Mexico and processed by a small number of large suppliers. Taylor Farms is one of the biggest US makers of packaged salads. Its products go to fast-food chains as well as supermarkets. So a problem at one grower or plant can reach many states in one season.

How it got here. Cases began climbing from May. Investigators first looked at lettuce served at Taco Bell. Federal officials then traced it to Taylor Farms. The company recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico. The recall covered thousands of salad products shipped to chains including Yum Brands, which owns Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC. Before this year, the worst year on US record was 2019, with about 4,700 illnesses, The Independent reports.

What is at stake. The open question is how sewage reached enough lettuce to make nearly 13,000 people ill. The answer will show whether the failure was at one farm or in how imported produce is checked.

Where it stands. The FDA has finished its inspections in Mexico. The samples it took have not yet been analysed.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the source of the outbreak is known
  • Three case figures for one outbreak
  • The outbreak count against this year's total
  • Fewer US inspections of imported produce
Same outbreak, three accountsSide by side

The bias in this coverageBias

Three counts for one outbreak

One report gives an exact case count and contradicts itself by one. A second rounds it to 13,000 in the headline and 'nearly 13,000' in the text. The third gives no count at all.

1 reports giving an exact case count 1 reports giving a rounded count 1 reports giving no count

The dead are counted, not named

Two of three reports count two deaths. None names the people who died. Two of three name the company whose lettuce was recalled.

2 reports counting the deaths 0 reports naming the dead 2 reports naming the company 1 reports giving hospitalisations
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.

Claims and verdicts

true The outbreak sickened nearly 13,000 people across 21 states.
The Guardian gives 12,883 cases in 21 states in its body and 12,882 in its standfirst, and The Independent gives 'nearly 13,000' in 21 states. Both put it near 13,000, but the Guardian's own two figures differ by one case.

misleading The origin of the outbreak is still unknown.
Both The Guardian and The Independent say the outbreak was linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms grown in central Mexico. The Independent's body shows that what is still unknown is how the parasite contaminated the crop, not which food carried it.
