Iran is 'ready to reopen Hormuz' if the US moves first, says an Iranian official; Trump 'asked to arrange a meeting', says Ynet
Both governments talked about talks on Tuesday, as Trump and Pezeshkian headed to the UN in New York. The nine reports we hold do not agree on who moved first, or on what terms.
The opening. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, says Iran and the United States "hinted" on Tuesday at reviving negotiations. It is the only report we hold that says both sides moved.
Who is asking whom. The other reports split.
| Outlet | Who moves | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post, Asharq Al-Awsat | Iran, if the US acts first | Iran is "ready to reopen" Hormuz if the US eases military pressure and lifts its blockade |
| Arutz Sheva | US | Rubio: Trump "is open to meeting with the Iranians" |
| Shargh | US | Rubio "claimed" the US is ready to meet Iran's delegation |
| Ynet | Both | an "Iranian signal"; Trump "asked to arrange a meeting" |
The sourcing. Iran's offer rests on one Iranian official. Neither report that carries it names the official. Rubio is named and on the record. Shargh uses "claimed" for Rubio. The Jerusalem Post calls his line on the bomb an "assertion".
The Iranian parliament. Deputy speaker Ali Nikzad told Shargh that talks are now tied to the strait. He said Iran "will not back down" on it and that "it is America that broke its word". Shargh carries no US reply.
Not settled. - Whether Iran's Hormuz offer is policy. It comes from one unnamed official. - Whether the US wants the "Islamabad memorandum" changed. Only Shargh reports it, citing the Emirati site Erem News. - Whether a meeting is booked. No report says so.
What this is about. Whether the United States and Iran, at war since February, will start talking again during the UN General Assembly in New York.
How it got here. The US and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution and the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran. Their long quarrel since then has centred on Iran's nuclear programme. A 2015 deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, limited that programme in return for lifting sanctions. Trump pulled the US out of it in 2018, in his first term. After the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza, Israel and Iran moved from a shadow conflict to open strikes. In June 2025 Israel bombed Iran and the US struck Iranian nuclear sites. In February 2026, Reuters reports, Trump launched "Operation Epic Fury" against Iran, alongside Israel.
The strait. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman at the mouth of the Gulf. Tankers from the Gulf producers pass through it. Speaking to Shargh, Iran's deputy speaker put its share of world oil at 25 per cent. The reports say Iran wants a US blockade lifted and ties any talks to the strait.
The actors. Donald Trump is US president, and Marco Rubio is his secretary of state. Masoud Pezeshkian has been Iran's president since 2024. Under Iran's system, the Supreme Leader has the final word on war and foreign policy. Iran's parliament speaks separately from the government. Israel is fighting alongside the US.
What is at stake. Talks could reopen the strait and wind the war down. Without them, Iran's deputy speaker says, fuel and oil prices will stay high.
Where it stands. Trump and Pezeshkian are both due at the General Assembly this week. The reports say both sides are open to meeting. None says a meeting has been set.
