Life.ru says Poland may have shot down a Ukrainian MiG-29; Censor.NET says it nearly did
Both cite the same Rzeczpospolita interview with Poland's operational commander. One has Poland conceding a hit, the other a jet nobody saw. Neither says an aircraft was lost.
One interview, two outcomes. Life.ru and Censor.NET both cite the same Rzeczpospolita interview with Poland's operational commander, Ireneusz Nowak, about the night of 30 July. They do not describe the same event.
| Report | What it says happened | Who is named |
|---|---|---|
| Life.ru | Polish forces "could have accidentally shot down" a Ukrainian MiG-29 | commander Ireneusz Nowak |
| Censor.NET | Polish forces did not notice the jet working near the border; the situation "could have led to friendly fire" | credited to the press only |
Neither says any aircraft was lost. We hold no Ukrainian account of what became of the MiG-29.
The order to fire. TASS writes that Polish air defences are authorised to intercept objects violating national airspace, and dates the prime minister's urgent meeting to 13 September over "several incidents". It names nobody granting the authority. Life.ru rests the same order on deputy defence minister Cezary Tomczyk, speaking on TVN24. Both are Russian reports of Polish officials; we hold no Polish report and no text of any order.
A drone, with and without a flag. Obozrevatel's headline calls the object found on the coast a Russian military drone and sources that to no one. Vedomosti reports a drone on a beach and names no owner. Neither gives a type, a marking or an official identification.
Not settled: whether the jet was hit or only unseen; who authorised the firing rules, and in what words; whose drone lay on the sand, and who found it.
What this is about: whether Poland's air defences came close to firing on a Ukrainian fighter jet while Russian missiles were in the air near the Polish border.
How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in the Donbas. In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Since then Russia has regularly struck Ukraine with missiles and drones, including targets in the west of the country, close to Poland. Each large attack puts Polish air defences on alert and sends Polish and allied jets into the air. Missiles and drones have strayed into Polish airspace before. In September 2025 Poland shot down drones over its own territory for the first time and asked NATO allies for formal consultations.
Who is involved, and why. - Ukraine defends its airspace with, among other aircraft, Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighters. Poland gave Ukraine some of its own MiG-29s in 2023. - Poland borders Ukraine, Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. It has been a NATO member since 1999 and is the main land route for Western military aid to Ukraine. Donald Tusk is prime minister and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz is defence minister. - Russia carries out the strikes, and its state media report closely on any sign of friction between Poland and Ukraine. - NATO is bound by treaty to defend Poland. Any shot fired over the border is a question for the whole alliance.
What is at stake. In the dark, over a border, a friendly jet and an incoming missile can look alike on radar. Looser rules on when to fire make it easier to stop Russian drones and missiles, and also make a mistake more likely. If an ally shot down a Ukrainian aircraft, that would strain the partnership Ukraine relies on most. If Poland holds back, Russian weapons may cross its border unchallenged.
Where it stands. On 13 September, TASS reports, the prime minister called an urgent meeting over "several incidents". Vedomosti reports that on the same day drones hit western Ukraine 1 km and 5 km from the Polish border. Kosiniak-Kamysz said troops pulled a drone out of the Baltic Sea near Rusinowo. We hold no Ukrainian or Polish account of the night of 30 July.

What is being argued about
- Whether Polish forces hit a Ukrainian MiG-29 on 30 July or only came close
- Poland's authorisation to open fire on objects crossing into its airspace
- A drone found on the Polish coast, called Russian by one report and unowned by another
- Who is named as the source: a commander, a deputy minister, or nobody
