Trump 'rejected' Iran's peace proposal, says a Reuters market headline; a US official says this week's talks are about an amended version of it
A US official told Reuters and The Jerusalem Post that the US and Iran will each meet mediators on Monday or Tuesday. The Jerusalem Post says the talks will focus on an amended Iranian proposal. In the same hour, a Reuters Portuguese markets headline said Trump had already rejected Iran's peace proposal. We hold no text that explains the gap.
Talks, but not face to face. A US official told Reuters and The Jerusalem Post that the US and Iran will hold separate talks with mediators on Monday or Tuesday. Iranian agencies quoted by Reuters' Italian service and RIA Novosti say Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meets mediators in New York today.

Who carries each side. 2 of 6 reports rest on one unnamed US official. None quotes Trump or a named US official. The Iranian account comes from Iranian agencies and from Araghchi.
What is not settled - Whether Trump rejected the proposal. One headline says so. We hold no article text behind it. - What the amendment changes. The Jerusalem Post does not say. - What Iran's conditions for reopening Hormuz are. Shargh says he named them. The part of the Shargh report we hold does not list them. - Who the mediators are. No report names them. The Jerusalem Post's photograph shows Araghchi with Qatar's prime minister on 22 September.
This story is about whether the United States and Iran, talking only through go-betweens, are close to a deal that would end their war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
How it got here. The US and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution and the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran. In 2015 Iran signed a nuclear deal with the US and five other powers. It limited Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for lifting sanctions. President Trump pulled the US out of it in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. In June 2025, Israel launched strikes on Iran. The US then bombed Iranian nuclear sites. A ceasefire followed within days. The reports we hold this week refer to a 'peace proposal' and to reopening the Strait of Hormuz. That means the two countries are at war again and the strait is shut or restricted. Our reports do not say how the present fighting began, and we do not state it.
The actors. - The United States under President Trump, one of the two parties. - Iran, the other party. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi represents it. - The mediators. No report names them. Qatar has carried messages between Washington and Tehran before, and it hosts a large US air base. The Jerusalem Post pictures Qatar's prime minister meeting Araghchi at the UN General Assembly in New York.
What is at stake. The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman. It is the only sea route out of the Gulf for the oil and gas of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. While it is closed, energy prices move. Reuters tied Monday's fall on Wall Street to higher oil prices. A deal could reopen the route. A rejection would leave it closed.
Where it stands. On Monday 28 September, both sides were due to meet mediators separately, today or tomorrow, in New York.
