Welt and the Washington Examiner say government forces attack the Houthis; a Jerusalem Post headline calls it a 'Houthi offensive'

Fighting has reached the approaches to Bab al-Mandab, the strait at the south end of the Red Sea. Two outlets say Saudi-backed government forces are attacking. One headline does not say who started it. None of the four reports we hold quotes the Houthis or counts the dead.

Großoffensive „Morgenröte“ – Wie mächtige Akteure die Macht der Huthi brechen wollen
Großoffensive „Morgenröte“ – Wie mächtige Akteure die Macht der Huthi brechen wollen as published by Welt · seen at Welt

What is reported. Welt says Yemeni government troops 'report gains' around Bab al-Mandab. The Washington Examiner, in an opinion piece, says Saudi-backed forces 'have launched a major campaign against the Iran-backed Houthis'. It says they have taken 'key positions around Dhubab' with 'heavy Saudi air support'.

Where the accounts differ.

Outlet Who it says is attacking Stated or attributed?
Welt Government troops, after a Houthi advance Gains attributed to the troops
Washington Examiner Saudi-backed forces; also 'competing offensives' Stated as fact, no source
The Jerusalem Post 'Houthi offensive': by them or against them is not clear Headline only; we hold no text
Reuters Not said Explainer headline only

The US role. Only the Washington Examiner says the US gives 'intelligence and targeting assistance' but no airstrikes. It names no source. No other report we hold mentions the US.

Who is missing. 0 of 4 reports quote a Houthi spokesperson. 0 of 4 give any count of dead, wounded or displaced. Only 1 of 4 carries more than a headline or opening lines.

What is not settled. - Who opened this round. Welt's opening has the Houthis advancing first. The Examiner writes of offensives on both sides. - Whether the government gains hold. Both accounts rest on the government side's own claims. - Whether the US is involved, and how. - How many people have been killed or forced from their homes.

What this is about. A new round of fighting in Yemen's civil war has reached the coast beside Bab al-Mandab, one of the world's main shipping lanes.

How it got here. In September 2014 the Houthis, an armed movement from Yemen's north, took the capital, Sanaa, and drove out the internationally recognised government. In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition went to war to restore that government. Years of fighting split the country. The Houthis hold Sanaa and much of the populous north and west. The government and allied forces hold the south and east. A UN-brokered truce in April 2022 largely stopped the big offensives, but no peace deal followed. From November 2023 the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea and said they were acting over the war in Gaza. The United States and the United Kingdom struck Houthi targets from January 2024.

The place. Bab al-Mandab is the narrow strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It joins the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Ships sailing between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal must pass it. Dhubab is a Yemeni coastal town beside it.

The actors. - The Yemeni government has been led since 2022 by a Presidential Leadership Council. It wants back the territory it lost. - Saudi Arabia borders Yemen and backs the government. - The Houthis govern most of northern Yemen. - Iran backs the Houthis. The UN and Western governments say that includes weapons. Tehran denies arming them. - The United States treats the Houthis as part of a wider contest with Iran. - Pakistan signed a mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia in September 2025. The Jerusalem Post headline treats this fighting as the first test of a pact that also includes Turkey.

What is at stake. Whoever holds the coast beside the strait can threaten or protect the ships that pass it. A government advance would push the Houthis back from the waterway. A failed one could widen the war.

Where it stands. On 6 October, two outlets reported a government push around Dhubab. We hold no Houthi account and no independent one.

What is being argued about

  • Who is attacking whom around Bab al-Mandab
  • Whether government gains near Dhubab are confirmed
  • An unsourced claim of US targeting help
  • The link to the Saudi–Pakistan–Turkey defence pact

The bias in this coverageBias

One headline leaves it unclear who launched the offensive

One headline calls it a 'Houthi offensive'. The only full text we hold says Saudi-backed forces launched the campaign and calls it 'competing offensives'. We hold no Houthi statement and no count of the dead or wounded.

1 reports with more than a headline or lede 1 reports naming the Saudi-backed side as the one that launched the campaign 0 reports quoting a Houthi spokesperson 0 reports giving any casualty figure

Both sides are named by their foreign backer

The full text calls one side 'Saudi-backed' and the other 'Iran-backed'. It names the Yemeni government only once, as the side that announced the operation. The German lede names the government troops but leaves their backers as 'powerful actors'.

1 reports labelling both sides by their foreign backer 1 reports calling the Houthis a militia
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.

Claims and verdicts

unverified Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have gained ground around Bab al-Mandab, including key positions near Dhubab.
The Washington Examiner opinion piece states it, and Welt's opening lines attribute the gains to the government troops' own reports. Both rest on the government side's account, and we hold no Houthi account and no independent one to confirm or contradict it.

unverified The government side, not the Houthis, is on the offensive around Bab al-Mandab.
Welt and the Washington Examiner describe a government campaign against the Houthis, but the Examiner also writes of 'competing offensives', with the Houthis fighting on other fronts. The Jerusalem Post headline says 'Houthi offensive', which could mean an offensive by the Houthis or against them, and we do not hold its text, so who is attacking whom is not settled by the reports we hold.
