Welt adds that CSU leader Markus Söder is sceptical of the working group and that the AfD's Alice Weidel wished it "viel Vergnügen". Brussels Signal calls the same move an "open-ended review process".

The other argument. Der Freitag says those who want to save "unsere Demokratie" are what made the AfD large. taz calls Rechtsextremismus a form of exorcism. Gazeta Wyborcza says millions back the AfD because mainstream parties offer them no shared future. All three state a cause in the writer's own voice, attributed to nobody.

Not settled. The vote share, the seats and the turnout: no report we hold carries any of them, nor who will govern Sachsen-Anhalt. Der Freitag's 83 percent negative rating for Merz names no pollster and no date. No report quotes a voter.

What this is about. Germany's AfD has won a state election in Sachsen-Anhalt. The country's mainstream parties now disagree on how to respond, and on whether the party should be banned.

How it got here. - 2013: the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is founded as a party against the euro bailouts. After the 2015 refugee arrivals it turns to migration and moves further right. It is strongest in the former East German states, which include Sachsen-Anhalt. - 2018: the CDU votes to rule out any coalition with the AfD. Germans call this the "firewall". - January 2024: Sahra Wagenknecht leaves Die Linke and founds her own party, the BSW. It mixes left-wing economics with scepticism of migration. - May 2025: Friedrich Merz of the CDU becomes chancellor. He leads a coalition of the CDU/CSU and the SPD. - Welt reports that the state's domestic intelligence office classes the AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt as "gesichert rechtsextremistisch", meaning confirmed right-wing extremist. It says the same of some other state branches.

The actors. - The AfD, led by Alice Weidel, with Ulrich Siegmund in Sachsen-Anhalt. - The CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU. They lead the federal government and are split on how to respond. Hendrik Wüst governs North Rhine-Westphalia and Markus Söder leads the CSU. - The Greens, the BSW and Die Linke. Each is weighing whether to help keep the AfD out of power. Die Linke also faces a Berlin city election in about two weeks, Welt reports.

What is at stake. A state government appoints the leaders of its police and its courts, Wüst noted in Welt. Germany's constitution allows a party to be banned. Only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat or the federal government can ask for a ban, and the Federal Constitutional Court decides. Two attempts to ban the far-right NPD failed, in 2003 and 2017. Söder told Welt that a ban would take years and could make the AfD look like martyrs.

Where it stands. No party has formed a government in Sachsen-Anhalt. We do not hold the vote shares or the seat counts. Wüst's working group is only a proposal. No ban application has been filed.
