Ynet calls Smotrich's arrest video AI; Jerusalem Post headlines 'arrests'; Arutz Sheva leaves the video out
Religious Zionism says it will join the next coalition only if its judicial plan goes through. Three Israeli reports use three words for the plan. Only two mention the video that launched it.
What the party says. Bezalel Smotrich's Religious Zionism will join the next coalition only if its judicial plan is carried out, Ynet and Arutz Sheva report. The Jerusalem Post puts it more softly: the plan applies "should it be part of the next government" after the October elections.
What the video shows. Ynet says the campaign is called "Releasing the Blockage" and was launched with an AI video. In it, Ynet says, police drag the Supreme Court president and the attorney general through burning streets. The Jerusalem Post headline says the video shows "arrests of judicial officials".
| Ynet | Jerusalem Post | Arutz Sheva | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word for the plan | "revolution" | "reform" | "overhaul" |
| Mentions the video | Yes | Yes | No |
| Says it is AI-made | Yes | Not in the text we hold | — |
| Label on the party | None | "far-right" | None |
Who is heard. All three reports carry the party's account. None quotes a judge, the court or the attorney general's office.
What is not settled - Whether the video is AI-made. Only Ynet says so. The still the Jerusalem Post published has a small "AI" mark in its corner. Its text does not say. - What the plan contains. None of the three reports, in the text we hold, sets out its terms. - Whether the court or the attorney general has answered. We hold no response.
What this is about. Bezalel Smotrich's party says it will join Israel's next government only if that government changes how Israel's courts work. This is the latest round of a fight that has divided Israel since the start of 2023.
How it got here - Israel has no written constitution. It has one chamber of parliament, the Knesset, and a set of Basic Laws. The Supreme Court is the main check on a government that controls a Knesset majority. - In late December 2022, Benjamin Netanyahu formed a coalition with religious and hard-right parties. Smotrich became finance minister. - In January 2023, Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced a plan to limit the Supreme Court's power to strike down laws and to give politicians more say in choosing judges. Simcha Rothman, a lawmaker from Smotrich's party, steered it through the Knesset committee that handled it. - Mass street protests followed for most of 2023. In July 2023 the Knesset passed one part of the plan. It stopped the court from striking down government decisions as "unreasonable". In January 2024 the court struck that law down. - The Hamas-led attack of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed pushed the fight into the background. The dispute between the government and the court's leadership continued.
Who is involved - Religious Zionism, Smotrich's party. It speaks for part of the settler movement and the religious right. - The Supreme Court president and the attorney general, who advises the government and can refuse to defend its decisions in court. Both are the targets of the party's campaign video. - Voters in the Knesset election due in October 2026.
What is at stake. Supporters say unelected judges have taken powers that belong to elected lawmakers. Opponents say the plan would take away the only real limit on a government's power. Both are arguments, not settled facts. If a small party makes the plan a condition for joining, it could decide which coalition can form after the election.
Where it stands. On 15 September the party launched its plan. None of the three reports we hold sets out what the plan contains, and none carries a response from the court or the attorney general.
