Iran says Hormuz stays shut until its June terms are met; a Ukrainian paper reports an Iraqi supertanker got through
Two Iranian lawmakers say Iran holds the strait and will not reopen it. Ekonomichna Pravda reports 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil moving through it. The New York Times reports Iran's security chief warning of a dire economic crisis under the US blockade.
Iran's line. The Jerusalem Post reports that parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the conditions it set in June are met. He said Washington "must understand that the period of dragging out the (diplomatic) process and dictating one-sided demands is over." IRNA quotes MP Boroujerdi saying the strait "is in Iran's hands" and that this policy cannot change.
Traffic still moving. Ekonomichna Pravda reports that Iraq's state tanker company moved 2 million barrels on a supertanker through the strait. It names no ship, gives no date and does not say who allowed the passage.
The pressure on Iran. The New York Times reports Mohsen Rezaei, Iran's security chief, warning of a dire economic crisis. The paper calls it a "rare admission" that came weeks after the US tightened sanctions and its naval blockade. CNBC reports that Gulf OPEC+ producers are pumping well below their targets because of export disruption from "the US-Israeli war on Iran".
| Outlet | What it says about the strait |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Closed until Iran's June terms are met (Ghalibaf) |
| IRNA | Held firmly by Iran (Boroujerdi) |
| Ekonomichna Pravda | An Iraqi supertanker with 2m barrels got through |
| The New York Times | Iran's economy is under strain from the US blockade |
| CNBC | Gulf exports disrupted; output below target |
What is not settled - Whether the Iraqi voyage happened. Only one report carries it. - Whether Iran let it through, and on what terms. - What Iran's June conditions are. None of these reports lists them. - What Washington says. None of the five reports quotes a US official.
What this is about. Two pressures are acting on the same stretch of sea: Iran says it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States is blockading Iran.
What the strait is. Hormuz is the narrow channel between Iran and Oman. It connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. Most oil exports from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE have to pass through it. Iraq ships most of its crude from Basra, inside the Gulf, so it has almost no other sea route.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have fought a shadow conflict for decades. It became open warfare after the Gaza war that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. The two states traded direct strikes in April and October 2024. In June 2025 Israel attacked Iran, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. US sanctions on Iran's oil trade go back further: Washington left the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposed them. CNBC now calls the fighting "the US-Israeli war on Iran". The reports we hold give no start date for it, and we do not supply one.
The actors. - Iran says it controls the strait. Its parliament speaker, Ghalibaf, ties reopening to conditions Iran set in June. - The United States enforces sanctions and, according to The New York Times, a naval blockade of Iran. - Iraq needs the strait open to sell its oil. - Gulf OPEC+ producers are pumping below their targets, CNBC reports.
What is at stake. If the strait stays shut, Gulf oil stays at sea or underground and world supply tightens. If the blockade holds, Iran's economy takes the strain, and its own security chief now says so.
Where it stands. Iran's lawmakers say the closure stands. At least one report says an Iraqi cargo got out. Neither side has publicly given way.
