Jerusalem Post: Pezeshkian says the US struck Iran three times despite an agreement; IRNA: he stressed dialogue and unity under sanctions
Iran's president spoke about talks with Washington on 1 October. The two reports we hold of his remarks do not lead with the same thing. The Jerusalem Post carries his complaint that the United States attacked Iran three times. IRNA, Iran's state news agency, does not mention it.
What both carry. Both reports say President Masoud Pezeshkian backed dialogue. The Jerusalem Post quotes him: "We have never shied away from talks, and we never will." IRNA says he "stressed the importance of economic diplomacy, dialogue and national unity."
Where they split. In the Jerusalem Post the same sentence goes on: "although the United States has targeted our country three times despite having signed an agreement." Its headline keeps the offer of talks and leaves the grievance out. IRNA names no one as acting. It gives only "sanctions and wartime conditions" as the background.
| The Jerusalem Post | IRNA | |
|---|---|---|
| Leads with | Openness to talks with the US | Economic diplomacy, dialogue, unity |
| Three US attacks | Yes, inside his quote | Not in the lines we hold |
| US named as acting | Yes, in his words | No |
| Who he seems to address | Washington | Iranians |
How much we hold. That is two reports in total. From IRNA we hold only the opening line. The rest of its report may carry more.
What is not settled - Which agreement he meant. Neither report names it. - Which three attacks he meant. No report lists them, and we cannot check the claim. - Where and to whom he spoke. Neither report says. - Whether any talks are planned. Neither report says.
What this is about. Iran's president said Iran is still open to talks with the United States, while it lives under US sanctions and what its state agency calls wartime conditions.
How it got here. The United States and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution and the US embassy hostage crisis. US sanctions date from that period and grew over the following decades, mainly over Iran's nuclear programme. In 2015 Iran agreed the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA with the US, China, Russia, France, the UK and Germany: limits on its nuclear work in exchange for sanctions relief. In 2018 the Trump administration pulled the US out of the deal and brought back sanctions. Iran later expanded its nuclear work. In June 2025 Israel launched strikes on Iran. The United States then bombed Iranian nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, and a ceasefire followed after about twelve days. Tehran's case that Washington breaks its word rests on this history. Neither report says which agreement or which three attacks Pezeshkian meant, and we do not guess.
The actors. Masoud Pezeshkian has been Iran's president since July 2024. He was elected after his predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi, died in a helicopter crash. Under Iran's system the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has the final word on foreign policy and on any talks with Washington. The president speaks for the government, not for the whole state. On 23 September 2026 Pezeshkian addressed the UN General Assembly in New York. The United States keeps the sanctions in place and decides whether there is anything to negotiate.
What is at stake. Talks could open a path to sanctions relief for Iran's economy. Without talks, the sanctions stay and the risk of more strikes remains.
Where it stands. The reports we hold carry his words, not any talks. Neither describes a meeting, a date or a US response.
