Russian helicopter over Poland: Le Figaro says 'accused', Wyborcza says 'violated', and iDNES puts the 300 metres at the border
Five European outlets reported one Polish military statement on 23 September. Four give the same 42 seconds. They differ on how sure to be, and on what the 300 metres measures.
What happened, by one account. Poland's Operational Command says a Russian military helicopter flew in from Kaliningrad, north of the town of Braniewo. Le Figaro quotes the command: the aircraft went in 'up to about 300 metres' and stayed '42 seconds'. Every report we hold rests on that one statement.
How sure each outlet is.
| Outlet | Headline verb | 300 metres | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Figaro | 'accused' of an incursion | about 300 m inside | not named |
| Gazeta Wyborcza | 'violated', no source | about 300 m inside | not named |
| iDNES.cz | 'flew into' | to 300 m from the border | Mi-8 |
| Telex | 'flew into' | not given | not named |
| HotNews.ro | 'entered' | not given | Mi-8 |
Why it happened, by one account. Telex alone quotes the Polish command on motive: Russia 'is again testing the readiness of our air defence'. Telex marks this as the command's claim. HotNews.ro opens on European warnings that Russia may step up action against Ukraine's allies, before it gives any fact about the flight.
What is not settled. - No report carries a Russian response. - Whether '300 metres' is depth inside Poland or distance from the border. iDNES's wording can be read either way. - The type rests on the Polish army, through two outlets. - No outlet reports what Poland or NATO did in the 42 seconds.
What this is about. A Russian military helicopter briefly crossed into Poland from Kaliningrad, according to the Polish armed forces.
How it got here. Kaliningrad is a piece of Russia cut off from the rest of the country. It sits on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, and both are members of the European Union and NATO. Russia keeps its Baltic Fleet there. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then Poland has been one of Ukraine's main backers and the main land route for Western aid. Its borders with Russia and Belarus have become a line of friction, and Warsaw has built up its army and border defences in response.
Who is involved. - Poland guards this stretch of NATO's eastern edge. Its Operational Command runs the armed forces day to day and announced the incident. - Russia holds Kaliningrad and is at war with Ukraine. None of the reports we hold carries a response from Moscow. - NATO and the EU. Under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. The EU sets the sanctions on Russia and funds much of the aid to Ukraine.
What is at stake. A brief crossing is not an attack. But each one tests how fast an ally sees an intruder and answers it. It also tests whether governments treat such events as accidents or as pressure. Polish commanders say in their own words that this one was a test. HotNews.ro sets it against wider European warnings about Russia. The reports we hold give no evidence for either claim of intent.
Where it stands. The helicopter left Polish airspace, by the Polish account. We hold no Russian statement and no report of any Polish or NATO response.

What is being argued about
- Is it an accusation or a fact? One headline hedges and one states it flat
- Did it fly 300 metres into Poland, or come to within 300 metres of the border?
- Is Russia testing Poland's air defences? Only the Polish command says so
- No report carries Moscow's side
