Tusk says a petrol station was "probably" hit; Poland's defence ministry says no drones were seen
Poland shut part of its airspace and two eastern airports and put fighter jets up on Thursday morning, then stood the measures down. The two reports we hold disagree about what exploded near the border, and only one of them says anything about whether drones crossed.
Both reports carry the same Polish response. Part of Polish airspace was closed for hours, two airports in the east of the country were shut as a precaution, the air-raid alarm sounded and Poland sent fighter jets up, NOS reports. Gazeta Wyborcza quotes Prime Minister Donald Tusk at a press conference: "our aircraft were scrambled". NOS says the measures have since been lifted.
They part on what happened, and where.
| Gazeta Wyborcza | NOS | |
|---|---|---|
| What was hit | "probably a petrol station" near Jagodzin in Ukraine, Tusk says, and "a very massive explosion" | explosions "not far from the border" late in the morning, nothing named |
| Damage at the border | not addressed | "no damage to the border infrastructure, it appears" |
| Drones over Poland | not addressed | none seen, the Polish defence ministry says |
| Ukraine's figures | none | more than a hundred missiles and drones fired, Ukraine says; nineteen wounded including two children; damage at 33 places in and around Kyiv, President Zelensky says |
Not settled. Neither report names who caused the blast near the border: one has explosions that simply sounded, the other prints a prime minister hedging the target inside his own quote. Only one of the two carries the no-drones statement, and it is the ministry's word, not an independent finding. Neither says who ordered the closures, or who established that the explosion was on the Ukrainian side. We hold no Russian account of the morning, and nobody hurt is named — only counted.
This is a story about a NATO member closing part of its own airspace for a few hours while missiles and drones were falling on the country next door.
How it got here. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and the war has since run as two parallel campaigns: fighting along a front in Ukraine's east and south, and long-range strikes far behind it, on cities and on energy and military sites. Ukraine has answered with strikes inside Russia. Poland borders Ukraine and sits on the main land route between western Europe and it. When Russian strikes fall on western Ukraine, the blasts are close enough to Polish soil that Poland raises its air defences — which is what both reports describe happening on Thursday morning. Jagodzin, which Gazeta Wyborcza names, is Yahodyn in Ukrainian: a village on the Ukrainian side of one of the main road crossings into Poland.
Who is in it. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004; Donald Tusk is its prime minister, and he spoke about the explosion at a press conference alongside the Austrian chancellor, Christian Stocker. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is the source for most of the figures in the reporting. Russia is named as the attacker in one report's headline, and by neither report's account of the blast itself.
What is at stake. The difference between a strike near a NATO border and an object crossing into NATO airspace is the difference between a national precaution and an alliance question. The North Atlantic Treaty lets any member call consultations when it believes its territory or its security is threatened, and treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all.
Where it stands. The airspace and the two airports are open again, the jets are down, and the Polish defence ministry says nothing was seen over Poland.
