Two kilometres from Poland, say Ukraine's railways — one, and five, says Warsaw's defence minister

A Russian drone hit the locomotive of the Kyiv–Warsaw train inside Ukraine on Sunday. No report we hold carries an injury. They differ on how close to Poland it came, and on what else was struck.

What happened. A Russian drone hit the locomotive of the Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train on Sunday morning, in Ukraine's Volyn region and on the Ukrainian side of the border. Two reports give the number aboard, 206, both taking it from Ukrainian railways. Five say nobody was hurt; none of the sixteen reports we hold names a single person on the train.

El Mundo's text gives no distance for the train itself.

Poland. Rzeczpospolita reports Donald Tusk calling in the services and jets scrambled. Rzeczpospolita and Digi24 both add, unhedged, that Polish airspace was not entered.

How big it is called. Ukrzaliznytsia, quoted by Le Figaro: "une attaque systémique sur le rail". Politico Europe quotes Andrii Sybiha on Putin's forces "knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO"; Digi24 runs that line in its own headline. Welt states it flat and unsourced: "Russland nimmt die Versorgung der Ukraine ins Visier."

Not settled. Whether the drone the Polish minister puts one kilometre out is the one that hit the train. Whether a petrol station was struck: Rzeczpospolita and Welt's earlier text say so, Le Figaro and Welt's later text do not. Público alone counts nine dead in Saturday's strikes on four cities.

What this is about. Russia's war on Ukraine has reached a train on the main rail line between Ukraine and the European Union, a few kilometres from Poland.

How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Ukraine's airspace has been closed to civilian flights since then. That made the railway the country's main way in and out for passengers, and a supply route from the West. Kyiv–Warsaw is one of the busiest of those trains. The Volyn region, where the drone hit, is in north-west Ukraine and borders Poland. Russian drones and missiles have strayed into NATO airspace before. In September 2025 Poland shot down Russian drones over its own territory and asked for NATO consultations. This week we have also reported a drone near Zelensky's plane over Moldova, and a Kremlin warning to Lithuania.

The actors. - Russia launched the drones. The reports we hold carry no Russian comment on this strike. - Ukraine: its state railway, Ukrzaliznytsia, says the rail network is under a "systemic" attack. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha framed the strike as a threat to the EU and NATO. - Poland is an EU and NATO member on Ukraine's western border. Most Western military aid reaches Ukraine through it. Donald Tusk has been prime minister since December 2023. - NATO: under Article 4 of its treaty, any member can ask for talks when it feels threatened. Article 5 treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all.

What is at stake. If a drone lands inside Poland, the war reaches a NATO and EU member directly, and the alliance has to decide how to respond. If the railway is cut, Ukraine loses its safest passenger link to Europe and a supply line.

Where it stands. The reports we hold carry no injuries. Poland scrambled jets. Rzeczpospolita and Digi24 say Polish airspace was not entered. Frankfurter Allgemeine reports that a Zelensky aide expects US–Ukraine–Russia talks in October.
