Ukrinform says five injured in Sumy, Ukrainska Pravda says six

Both agree on this much. Russian forces struck Sumy with guided aerial bombs on 16 September. People were hurt. Past that, the three reports we hold split.

Five, or six. Ukrinform, Ukraine's state agency, says the bombs hit "the Sumy territorial community", "injuring five people". Ukrainska Pravda says "six injured, including a 14-year-old girl, and destroying two houses". Its Ukrainian-language report names the districts — Kovpakivskyi and Zarichnyi — and says a child was among the six, without giving an age. The two Ukrainska Pravda reports are one account published in two languages, so this is two sources, not three.

Who is named as acting. The Ukrainian-language report puts the Russian army in the subject of the sentence, then puts the injured in a clause with no actor named: six were hurt "as a result". The English version makes the bombs the subject and the force that launched them an adjective.

Not settled. No report we hold says who produced either figure, or at what hour it was taken. Neither number is hedged — both are stated flat. The girl's age and the two houses rest on one account alone. The higher figure is the earlier one.

What this is about. A Russian air strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on 16 September 2026, and two Ukrainian sources giving different counts of the injured.

How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting began in the Donbas. On 24 February 2022 Russia invaded on a full scale, and the fighting has run continuously since. Sumy is the capital of Sumy region, in Ukraine's north-east; the region runs along the Russian border, opposite Kursk and Belgorod. Guided aerial bombs — KABs, the abbreviation both reports use — are conventional bombs fitted with wings and a guidance kit, released by an aircraft at a distance so it need not fly over the target. That reach is why border cities are struck by them, and why warning time is short.

Who is in it. Russia's air force launched the bombs. On the Ukrainian side, casualty counts after a strike are issued by officials: the head of the regional military administration and the city authorities. The Ukrainian-language report names them; Ukrinform, Ukraine's state news agency, names nobody. Ukrainska Pravda is a privately owned Ukrainian news site. All three reports we hold on this strike are Ukrainian.

What is at stake. A first figure from a strike is taken while rescuers are still working, and it is a claim about a count, not a count. Two of them, published half an hour apart, can differ because time passed, because one included someone the other did not, or because they came from different people — and unless a report says who counted and what they counted, a reader cannot tell which. Numbers like these are what later totals are built from.

Where it stands. We hold nothing later than 16 September on this strike. The gap between five and six is unexplained in the reports, and neither outlet says who produced its figure.
