An-Nahar puts the bridge's ruin in 'the last war'; LBCI logs Israeli shelling the same day
On 4 October Lebanon began a stop-gap crossing for a bridge destroyed in what An-Nahar calls "the last war". Within two hours, LBCI logged shelling, blasts and burned homes in the Nabatieh and Tyre districts. No report we hold counts anyone killed or hurt.
Two pictures of one day. On 4 October, An-Nahar and LBCI both carried a statement from the Litani River Authority. It says work has begun on a temporary water crossing at Tayr Falsay. An-Nahar's version says Israeli strikes hit the bridge "during the last war". On the same day, LBCI posted three headlines about shelling, blasts and fires in the south.
Who is named as striking. The reports do not agree.
| Place | Outlet | What it says | Who struck? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mayfadoun, Arnoun–Kfar Tebnit | LBCI | "Israeli shelling" | Israel |
| Mansouri (Tyre) | LBCI | "huge explosions", two strikes | none named |
| Zawtar al-Sharqiya | LBCI | shelling, houses burned | none named |
| Zawtar al-Sharqiya, Kfar Tebnit | An-Nahar | Israeli Merkava tanks still wrecking them | Israel |
The state's answer. An-Nahar says Prime Minister Nawaf Salam led a ministerial and security delegation to Nabatieh. It quotes Finance Minister Yassine Jaber as saying the visits are not for show. No other report we hold mentions the visit.
Israel's aims, second-hand. Al-Modon cites Israeli reports. They say Hezbollah is at Jabal Safi and Tyre is "one night away". No report we hold quotes an Israeli official.
What is not settled - Whether anyone was killed or hurt. No report gives a figure. - Who burned the homes in Zawtar al-Sharqiya. LBCI's headline names no one. - Whether the crossing works are under way. Both reports rest on one statement.
This story is about southern Lebanon. Israeli military action goes on there while the Lebanese state tries to rebuild and hold its ground.
How it got here. Hezbollah, the armed Shia movement and political party, opened fire on northern Israel on 8 October 2023. It said it was acting in support of Gaza after the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October. The cross-border fire grew into a full Israeli air campaign and ground invasion in autumn 2024. A ceasefire brokered by the United States and France took effect on 27 November 2024. Israeli troops stayed at positions inside Lebanon, and strikes continued. The reports we hold also refer to a later "last war" and to a new US-brokered agreement under which some residents are returning. They do not date either.
The actors. - Israel says it is acting against Hezbollah. Lebanese outlets and Mondoweiss call its presence an occupation. - Hezbollah is armed, and its base is among Shia communities in the south. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) bars armed groups other than the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers from the area south of the Litani River. - Lebanon's government is led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, in office since early 2025. It is negotiating with Israel under US pressure. An-Nahar says the next round is in Tampa, Florida. - Speaker Nabih Berri leads Amal, Hezbollah's ally. An-Nahar says Hezbollah has criticised how the government is handling the talks, and that Berri welcomed those criticisms.
What is at stake. Nabatieh and Tyre are the main towns of the south. An-Nahar says voices in Israel want the army to push on towards Iqlim al-Tuffah and Jezzine. If it did, An-Nahar says, the people still left in Nabatieh and Zahrani would be driven out.
Where it stands. By An-Nahar's account, the next round of talks falls a week before Israel's Knesset election. Strikes are still being logged. The state is laying asphalt and building a stop-gap crossing.
