Arutz Sheva says Eisenkot promised to bring Ra'am into government; Haaretz says four of eight council heads refused to endorse him

Eight northern Bedouin council heads met Gadi Eisenkot on 16 September. The two reports we hold agree on the number and on almost nothing else about the room.

One meeting, two accounts. Eight northern Bedouin council heads met Gadi Eisenkot on 16 September. Both reports we hold put the number at eight. What was said there is disputed.

Arutz Sheva Haaretz
The disputed claim a council head says Eisenkot promised to bring Ra'am into a government he formed Yashar says the council heads endorsed Eisenkot for prime minister
Who denies it Yashar: "These things were never said, not even by implication" four of the eight council heads, who "explicitly rejected" the request
Sources counted none given four of eight at the meeting
The meeting's subject not stated "replacing the government and problems facing their communities"

They are not the same dispute. One is about a promise on Ra'am. The other is about an endorsement for prime minister. Neither report carries both, so we hold no single source covering the whole disagreement.

What is not settled. Whether Eisenkot said anything about Ra'am, and whether anyone in the room endorsed him. Neither report we hold quotes Eisenkot himself. Neither names a single Bedouin council head, so we cannot tell whether the one quoted by Arutz Sheva is among the four who spoke to Haaretz. Four of the eight have not been heard from at all.

What this is about. A private meeting in Israel between an opposition politician and eight elected leaders of Bedouin towns — and two Israeli outlets giving accounts of it that cannot both be right.

How it got here. Gadi Eisenkot commanded Israel's armed forces as chief of staff from 2015 to 2019. He entered politics with Benny Gantz's National Unity party before the November 2022 election, which returned Benjamin Netanyahu to office at the head of a coalition with far-right partners. After the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the Gaza war that followed, Eisenkot sat in the emergency war cabinet; he and Gantz left the government in June 2024. He later broke with Gantz and founded his own party, Yashar, which is why he now needs to build a base of his own — and why a meeting with local leaders is treated as politics rather than courtesy.

Who the actors are. Bedouin citizens of Israel are Arab citizens, concentrated in the Negev in the south and in towns across the Galilee in the north; their local council heads are elected municipal officials, not national politicians. Ra'am, the United Arab List led by Mansour Abbas, is an Islamist Arab party that in June 2021 became the first independent Arab party to join an Israeli governing coalition, under Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. That coalition collapsed the following year. Whether an Arab party can sit in an Israeli government again is one of the sharpest arguments in Israeli politics, on both sides of it.

What is at stake. Israeli coalitions are built from narrow blocs, so any future challenge to Netanyahu turns on who is willing to sit with whom. A promise about Ra'am would matter to Jewish voters Eisenkot is courting; an endorsement from Bedouin leaders would matter to Arab voters.

Where it stands. Both claims are denied. Eisenkot is not quoted in either report we hold, and four of the eight council heads have not been heard from.

What is being argued about

  • A 16 September meeting between Gadi Eisenkot and eight northern Bedouin council heads
  • Whether Eisenkot promised to bring Ra'am into a government he formed
  • Whether the council heads endorsed Eisenkot for prime minister
  • Four of the eight have spoken to a newspaper; four have not

The bias in this coverageBias

One meeting, two accounts of what was said in it

Eight northern Bedouin council heads met the politician; four of them told a newspaper they refused the endorsement that was asked of them. The other report leads on one council head's account that a promise was made about bringing a party into government, with the denial placed underneath. The two accounts of the same meeting are flatly incompatible, and neither report we hold quotes the politician himself.

8 council heads at the meeting 4 council heads who denied endorsing him 0 reports quoting the politician directly 2 reports carrying both accounts
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.
