Politico calls it an "offener Machtkampf" in the AfD; Der Freitag calls the slogan the plan
Seven reports from five countries on the AfD's 43.8 percent in Saxony-Anhalt. They share the number and little after it: what the party wants, what the CDU should do about it, and what Trump's congratulation did to Berlin.
The number. 43.8 percent in Sunday's Saxony-Anhalt election. Two of the seven reports we hold print it. Deník N alone says it is nearly double the party's result five years ago. None gives the seat count that decides whether a government can be formed.
What the winner wants.
| Report | What the AfD does next |
|---|---|
No dispute, and Chrupalla never appears |
What the others should do. Welt has North Rhine-Westphalia's Hendrik Wüst demanding an "ergebnisoffene Prüfung der Verfassungsmäßigkeit". The Frankfurter Allgemeine has outgoing premier Sven Schulze proposing instead that Saxony-Anhalt give up its turn chairing the premiers' conference — "politisch unanständig", says the BSW group there; "keine Ausgrenzung", answers the current chair. taz gives its headline to an online commentator who says the answer is humour.
Washington. Libération reports Merz putting off Wednesday's call with Trump after Trump congratulated the party. The Frankfurter Allgemeine confirms the government criticised Trump's remarks; no second report we hold mentions the call.
Not settled. Whether the split inside the AfD is real: one report describes it, another covers the same man's plans and never names Chrupalla. Whether the call was put off because of the congratulation, or only after it. And the seats.
What this is about. A party that other German parties refuse to govern with has just won a state election by a wide margin, and the rest of the political system is arguing about what follows.
How it got here. The Alternative für Deutschland was founded in 2013 in opposition to euro-zone bailouts and remade itself after the migration crisis of 2015 around opposition to immigration. Its strongest results are in the east — the states of the former German Democratic Republic, which joined the Federal Republic at reunification in 1990. Saxony-Anhalt is one of them. Germany's sixteen states elect their own parliaments and run their own police, schools and courts, and their premiers meet in a standing conference whose chair rotates; Saxony-Anhalt's turn begins on 1 October, the Frankfurter Allgemeine reports. Voters there went to the polls on Sunday 6 September. The AfD took 43.8 percent, Der Freitag and Deník N report — nearly double its result five years ago, Deník N says. The new state parliament sits for the first time on 6 October, per the Frankfurter Allgemeine.
Who is in it. Ulrich Siegmund led the AfD campaign; Tino Chrupalla is a federal party chair. Sven Schulze of the Christian Democrats is the outgoing premier and lost. Hendrik Wüst runs North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's largest state, for the same party. Friedrich Merz, also CDU, is federal chancellor. Germany's domestic intelligence service monitors the AfD; on 7 September we reported that outlets disagree over whether it is classified as far-right outright or in parts. Under the Basic Law only the Federal Constitutional Court can ban a party, and only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat or the federal government may ask it to — the route behind the working group Welt reported Wüst seeking on 8 September.
What is at stake. Whether the AfD forms a state government for the first time, or whether the parties that exclude it can assemble a majority without it. Both depend on seats, which none of the reports we hold gives.
The story so far
- Welt reports Wüst seeking a working group to examine an AfD ban; Brussels Signal says he "breaks CDU ranks" · 8 Sep 2026
- taz names „Daniel V.“; Welt and the SZ say only „ein 48-Jähriger aus Gevelsberg“ · 7 Sep 2026
- Welt: "classified as confirmed far-right". The agency copy taz runs: "far-right in parts" · 7 Sep 2026
- Police say 10,000 in Magdeburg, the organisers 20,000, Le Figaro's reporter a few thousand · 6 Sep 2026
- Welt counts 1.4 million records in the Berlin leak; FAZ measures the same haul at 5.8 terabytes · 6 Sep 2026
- Le Figaro says Putin ordered a three-day halt on Kyiv. NOS says both presidents agreed one, with no end date. · 6 Sep 2026

What is being argued about
- Whether the AfD aims at an absolute majority or a minority government
- Whether the party's constitutionality should be tested, and who is saying so
- Trump's congratulation and the postponed Merz call
- What each report prints instead of the 43.8 percent figure
