Two reports say Russia's defence minister decorated the commander of the corvette Soobrazitelny after an encounter with a Danish military helicopter. The Russian state agency, writing on the same encounter, does not mention an award.

The act. Ukrainska Pravda says Russia's defence minister, Andrii Belousov, decorated the commander of the corvette Soobrazitelny, who "fired signal rockets in the direction of a helicopter of the Danish armed forces in international waters near Gedser". Its headline drops the word signal: he fired towards the helicopter.

The pattern. The Insider carries the same award and names nobody who gave it — the commander "was decorated", plural and unattributed. It adds that pilots were given orders earlier, after an encounter with a US drone, which no other report we hold mentions.

The silence. TASS, the Russian state agency, published on the same encounter twelve minutes earlier and reports no award. Its headline calls it an "incident with Russian warship, Danish Air Force helicopter". The text we hold says only that TASS "has compiled the main information available so far".

Not settled. We do not hold the Russian defence ministry announcement that both reports appear to be reading. We hold no Danish account at all. That anything was fired, and where, rests on one Ukrainian report and one exile Russian headline. Nobody we hold says how close the helicopter came, or on what day.

What this is about. A Russian warship and a Danish military helicopter came near each other in the Baltic Sea in mid-September, each government says the other was at fault, and Russia's defence minister has now decorated the ship's commander.

How it got here. Russia and Ukraine have been at war since 2014, and since February 2022 Russia has been fighting a full-scale invasion. Denmark is a founding member of NATO, the alliance formed in 1949 whose members undertake to defend one another, and it backs Ukraine. Russia's Baltic Fleet is based at Kaliningrad, the Russian territory wedged between Poland and Lithuania. Finland joined NATO in 2023 and Sweden in 2024, leaving Russia the only non-NATO state on the Baltic coast — alliance and Russian forces now work the same narrow sea. Gedser, named in one report, is Denmark's southernmost point, beside the shipping lane out of the Baltic.

Encounters of this kind have run through the month. This desk filed on 13 September on a dispute over whether NATO jets scrambled for a flock of birds or a drone into Kaliningrad, and on 14 September on whether Poland shot at a Ukrainian MiG-29.

The actors. Russia's defence ministry, whose account of 14 September is the only description of the encounter we hold, and whose minister, Andrii Belousov, gave the medal. Denmark, which summoned Russia's ambassador; its prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said Russia had stepped up "hybrid war" against Europe. Russia's ambassador in Copenhagen, who said the Danish helicopter "provoked" the Russian ship by its manoeuvres. Who provoked whom is contested, and each version belongs to the government that made it.

What is at stake. Summoning an ambassador is the ordinary protest, and matters can end there. A medal does something else: it makes one commander's decision to fire into the air near an allied aircraft the navy's approved conduct, which is what the next crew reads.

Where it stands. We hold no Danish response to the award, and not the ministry announcement itself.
