Al Jazeera says BRICS "avoids condemning" the war on Iran; Shargh quotes Pezeshkian saying the statement condemned it
Eight reports on the New Delhi summit. None of them quotes the line of the declaration that would settle which is right.
The claim. Al Jazeera English writes, in its own voice, that the 11-nation bloc "avoids condemning the US-Israel war on Iran, showing the divisions among the members".
The counter-claim. Shargh, in Tehran, carries President Masoud Pezeshkian saying the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and infrastructure was condemned in the summit statement. In that headline nobody strikes: there was an attack, and it was condemned.
Nobody shows the sentence.
| Outlet | On the declaration and Iran | Quotes the text |
|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera English (Qatar) | The bloc avoided condemning the US-Israel war on Iran | No |
| Shargh (Iran) | Pezeshkian: the attack on the nuclear sites was condemned in the statement | No |
| An-Nahar (Lebanon) | Quotes the declaration on IMF reform and payments; Iran appears only among the members | Yes, on finance |
| Asharq Al-Awsat (Saudi Arabia) | Leads on Xi Jinping's "Greater BRICS" trade and AI plans; the war does not appear | No |
What is settled. The 18th leaders' summit, New Delhi, 12 and 13 September, eleven members including Iran and Saudi Arabia — Shargh and An-Nahar agree, An-Nahar citing India's foreign ministry. That ministry's text backs continued work by the bloc's payments group, with no declared commitment to a shared payment structure or a single currency.
Not settled. Whether the declaration names the strikes on Iran at all. One report asserts the silence, one relays a president's account of the opposite, and neither shows the words. None of the eight reports we hold is from an outlet in India, the host and this year's chair.
What this is about. Eleven governments that meet as BRICS held their annual summit in New Delhi, and the argument is over whether their closing declaration said anything at all about the attacks on Iran — one of the eleven.
How it got here. BRICS started as a name for four large emerging economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China — which began meeting as a group in 2009; South Africa joined the following year. It has no treaty, no headquarters and no army. It has a rotating chair, a summit, and a declaration agreed by consensus, which means a single member can hold up a sentence. It has since admitted Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — the eleven listed in India's foreign ministry briefing note, as An-Nahar reports it. India chairs in 2026 and hosted; China chairs in 2027.
Iran's nuclear programme has been disputed for two decades. Iran is a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its declared sites are inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency. A 2015 agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union capped enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief; the United States withdrew from it in 2018. Israel and the United States have long said Iran must not obtain a weapon; Iran says the programme is civil. The confrontation, long fought through allies, has since become direct: Iran's nuclear facilities and infrastructure have been attacked, an attack Al Jazeera English describes as a US-Israel war on Iran. We have reported this week on strikes and closures around the Strait of Hormuz and on drones fired at Saudi Arabia from Iraq.
Why each is here. Iran arrives as a member under fire, wanting the bloc's name on its side. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are members and also American security partners. India needed the summit to work.
At stake. Whether BRICS is a political bloc or a finance forum. The summit ended on 13 September.
