Shargh says America struck the ship off Hengam; Asharq Al-Awsat says the governor would not name who
One crew member was killed on a merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Five reports give four answers to who fired, two counts of the wounded and two clock times.
One man is dead and the five reports we hold give four answers to who killed him. A merchant vessel was struck off Hengam and Qeshm islands in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, a day before a regional meeting in Muscat on maritime arrangements there.
Only one report names a state. Shargh, in Tehran, writes in its own voice that America attacked an Iranian commercial ship. Shargh's own longer account, filed an hour later, says only "the enemy's projectile".
| Outlet | Attacker named | Wounded | Time of strike |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shargh, 11:43 GMT | the United States, stated flat | 4 | — |
| Shargh, 12:41 GMT | "the enemy's projectile" | — | 2:30 am |
| Haaretz | a "terrorist enemy", via IRNA | — | — |
| Asharq Al-Awsat, 05:49 GMT | none — origin "not specified" | 3 | about 5:00 am |
| Asharq Al-Awsat, 05:17 GMT | none | crew status unknown | — |
The counts do not match either. Three reports carry a casualty figure and all say one dead. Two give the wounded, and they differ by one. The two clock times are two and a half hours apart, on the same morning, off the same island.
Not settled: who fired; whether three or four were wounded; whether the strike was at 2:30 or 5:00 am; and whether the projectile the British navy-affiliated monitor UKMTO reported hit this ship or another. No report we hold names the dead man or gives his nationality.
What this is about. A man was killed on a merchant ship in the Strait of Hormuz, and the accounts of who fired do not agree.
The place. The strait is the only sea route between the Persian Gulf and the open ocean. It is narrow: Iran on the north shore, Oman and the United Arab Emirates on the south. Hengam and Qeshm, named in every report we hold, are Iranian islands inside it. Almost all the oil exported by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the Emirates and Iran leaves through that channel, which is why an attack on one vessel is read as a threat to all of them.
How it got here. The United States and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution. In 2015 Iran agreed with six powers to limit its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief; President Trump withdrew the United States in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. Since the Gaza war that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023, the confrontation has repeatedly gone from proxy to direct — Israel and Iran struck each other's territory in 2024, and in June 2025 the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The US Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, on the Gulf itself.
The last ten days, as we reported them: Israel's defence minister was said by the Jerusalem Post to have threatened Iran's energy sites; Trump said America controls Hormuz while Asharq Al-Awsat reported Iran had it blockaded; Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline after a drone attack that Riyadh and Baghdad both said came from Iraq, which nobody claimed; and Iran called eight coastal states to talk about the waterway.
What is at stake. If a state is established as the attacker, a shipping incident becomes an act of war. If traffic stops, so does the oil.
Where it stands. One man dead, nobody claiming the strike, and the coastal states due to meet the next day.

What is being argued about
- Who struck the vessel — a state, an unnamed enemy, or nobody the reports will name
- How many of the crew were hurt, and at what hour
- Whether a second vessel was hit in the strait the same night
- Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the risk to oil supply
