Digi24 says the AfD won Saxony-Anhalt; the German reports say "shock", "hopeless" and "the firewall does not work"
Five reports on one German state election, filed within ninety minutes of each other. One names a winner. None gives a number.
What every report takes as settled. Five reports, filed between 11:24 and 12:52 on 12 September, treat the Saxony-Anhalt election as decided and as meaning something nationally. None prints a vote share, a seat count or a turnout figure.
What each one calls the result.
| Outlet | The result is | In whose words |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | "der Wahl-Schock in Sachsen-Anhalt" | the outlet's own, attributed to nobody |
| Welt | Friedrich Merz in a "ziemlich ausweglose Situation" | the political scientist Werner Patzelt |
| taz | proof the "Brandmauer-Strategie funktioniert nicht" | Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni |
| Digi24 | an AfD win driven by east-west income gaps and fear of war | the former foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu |
Who is doing the explaining. Four of the five rest their verdict on one named person, and three of those hold no office in Germany. No voter in Saxony-Anhalt is quoted in anything we hold, and no politician from the state.
What is not settled. Who won, and by how much. Only Digi24 names a winner, in a Romanian television interview. Whether anything has changed in Berlin: the Frankfurter Allgemeine reports doubts growing over two projects and names neither; Welt reports the Union and the SPD arguing over social reforms and the budget. Neither says a plan has been dropped. Meloni's verdict is carried by taz alone.
What this is about. A state election in Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, and whether the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has become strong enough there to shake the government in Berlin.
How it got here. - Saxony-Anhalt is one of the sixteen German states, or Länder. It was part of communist East Germany and was re-formed when Germany reunified in 1990. Its capital is Magdeburg. It elects its own parliament, the Landtag, which chooses the state government. - The CDU has led the state since 2002. Reiner Haseloff (CDU) became minister-president in 2011. After the 2021 election he governed with the SPD and the FDP. - The AfD was founded in 2013 as a party against the euro. It later turned to migration, and has been strongest in the eastern states. In 2023 Saxony-Anhalt's domestic intelligence office classified the state party as confirmed right-wing extremist. The AfD rejects that label. - The other main parties refuse to govern with the AfD or to rely on its votes. Germans call this the "Brandmauer", or firewall. The CDU wrote it into a party resolution in 2018. - Friedrich Merz (CDU) has been chancellor since May 2025. He leads a coalition of the CDU/CSU and the SPD.
The actors. - The AfD wants to break the firewall by winning outright or becoming impossible to govern without. - The CDU runs both the state and the federal government. The AfD is its main rival in the east. - Giorgia Meloni has been Italy's prime minister since 2022. Her party sits in the ECR group in the European Parliament. The AfD sits in a different group, ESN. - Romania watches because its own sovereigntist party, AUR, made the 2025 presidential runoff and lost it.
What is at stake. If the AfD is the largest party, the others must build a majority without it or bend the firewall. For Merz, a bad result in the east adds to strain inside a coalition that has already been arguing.
Where it stands. None of the reports we hold gives a vote share or a seat count. Only Digi24 says the AfD won. We could not confirm the result from the reports we hold.
