Five drones, says Moldova's military in Wyborcza; three missiles and two drones, say local authorities in Politico
Four reports cover Saturday's airspace violation over Moldova. Two give a count, and the counts do not match. Two mention missiles. None names a person hurt.
What happened. On Saturday morning, aircraft crossed into Moldova's airspace and debris came down inside the country. Politico Europe and Frankfurter Allgemeine name Russia. Gazeta Wyborcza and taz name no actor.
Where the accounts split. Two reports give a count. They differ on the count and on who gave it.
| Outlet | What entered | Who said so | Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gazeta Wyborcza | five unmanned aircraft, no missiles mentioned | the military | wreckage found in four districts |
| Politico Europe | three missiles and two drones | local authorities | "collateral damage", not described |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | Russian drones, and missiles "according to President Sandu" | President Maia Sandu | impacts, no number |
| taz | not given | not given | "Moldova reports impacts" |
Same total, different objects. Both counts come to five. The split is over whether three of them were missiles. Wyborcza published first and carries the military's figure. Politico and FAZ came more than an hour later, and both carry missiles.
What is not settled. - Whether any missiles entered. Only local authorities, in Politico, and Sandu, in FAZ, say so. - Where the debris fell. Only Wyborcza gives a number of districts. None of the four reports names a place. - Whether anyone was hurt. No report says. - Whether the military later changed its count. We hold no report that says.
What this is about. On Saturday, during Russia's war on Ukraine, drones crossed into Moldova and debris fell on Moldovan soil. Some accounts say missiles crossed too.
How it got here. Moldova is a small former Soviet republic between Romania and Ukraine. It became independent in 1991. A short war in 1992 left the eastern strip of Transnistria under a Russian-backed breakaway government. Russian troops are still stationed there.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Russian strikes on southern and western Ukraine, including the Odesa region on Moldova's eastern border, send drones and missiles along routes that cross or run close to Moldovan airspace. Since 2022 Moldova has repeatedly reported such crossings and debris on its territory.
Moldova applied to join the European Union in March 2022, days after the invasion. The European Council made it a candidate country in June 2022. Accession talks formally opened in June 2024.
The actors. - Moldova's government. President Maia Sandu, in office since December 2020, leads the pro-EU camp. The military and local authorities report incidents. She speaks for the state. - Russia. It is waging the war in Ukraine and keeps troops in Transnistria. It opposes Moldova's turn towards the EU. - Ukraine. The strikes whose path crosses Moldova are aimed at Ukraine. - The European Union. Moldova is negotiating to join it. Romania, next door, is a member of both the EU and NATO.
What is at stake. Moldova is not in NATO, and its constitution declares it neutral. Its air defence is small. Each crossing tests how much an EU candidate on the edge of the war can protect, and what its partners will do about it.
Where it stands. The reports we hold agree that something crossed and that debris fell. They do not agree on what it was.
