Merz says "ethnic cleansing", the AfD says defamation, a Welt expert says a ban "wäre ein großer Fehler"
Four reports on one dispute. Three of them carry a fact no other report we hold confirms or denies, no AfD figure is quoted in their own words, and nobody arguing for a ban is quoted at all.
The complaint. Brussels Signal is the only report we hold that carries it: the AfD has filed a defamation complaint against Chancellor Merz after he "alleged their 'remigration' slogan equates to ethnic cleansing". It hedges both sides — he alleged, the party claims defamation. No other report we hold mentions it either way.
The same phrase, stated flat. taz writes the charge as its own conclusion: the intent behind "ethnische Säuberungen" "lassen sich nicht mehr wegdefinieren". No speaker is attached. taz is also the only report naming a person rather than the party — Ulrich Siegmund, who it says wants military equipment for his remigration plans. It quotes him nowhere.
| Report | The word used | Attributed? |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels Signal | "ethnic cleansing", as Merz alleged | Yes, both sides |
| taz, on remigration | "ethnische Säuberungen" | No, own voice |
| taz, on the vote | "Machtergreifung" | No, own voice |
| Welt | the ban, not the phrase | Reported speech |
On a ban. Welt carries the only voice quoted on banning the party, and it is against: the political scientist Kai-Uwe Schnapp warns a ban would shut more than a quarter of voters out of debate and strengthen the party. Welt notes a large demonstration for a review procedure and quotes nobody from it.
Not settled. Three facts, one report each: that Merz said it, that the AfD won in Sachsen-Anhalt, that Siegmund asked for armaments. We hold no second account of any of them.
What this is about: whether Germany should try to ban its largest opposition party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and how hard its opponents may attack it in words.
How it got here.
- 2013: The AfD is founded as a party against the euro bailouts. Over the following years it turns to immigration and national identity.
- 2017: It enters the Bundestag for the first time.
- January 2024: The investigative outlet Correctiv reports on a meeting in Potsdam where "remigration", meaning the removal of people with migrant backgrounds, was discussed. Mass protests follow. The AfD has since adopted the word as a slogan. Its critics say it means expelling citizens. The party says it does not.
- February 2025: The AfD comes second in the federal election. Friedrich Merz of the CDU becomes Chancellor in May 2025, at the head of a coalition with the SPD. The mainstream parties keep a "firewall": they refuse to govern with the AfD.
- May 2025: The domestic intelligence service classifies the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist party. The party challenges this in court.
- September 2026: Our earlier coverage reported that North Rhine-Westphalia's CDU premier, Hendrik Wüst, wanted a working group to examine a ban. It also reported that the AfD won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt.
Who is involved.
- The AfD sits with Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) in the European Parliament. Ulrich Siegmund led its campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.
- Merz and the CDU are split. Some want a ban examined. Others fear a ban would make the party look like a martyr.
- The courts: under Article 21 of the Basic Law, only the Federal Constitutional Court can ban a party. Only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat or the federal government can ask it to.
What is at stake. A ban would remove a party that millions vote for. Not attempting one leaves a party classified as extremist close to power in a state. The last attempt, against the NPD, failed in 2017: the court found the party's aims unconstitutional but the party too small to be a threat.
Where it stands. No application for a ban has been filed. The reports we hold say the AfD is suing the Chancellor for defamation and that people demonstrated for a ban review. We hold no court date for either.
