The Jerusalem Post says Iraqi militias "desecrate" the US flag; Iraq's prime minister orders an inquiry into an "infringement" and names no one
A US flag was laid on the road at a Sovereignty Day parade in Baghdad. The Jerusalem Post blames the militias. Iraq's government condemns the act and opens an inquiry, but does not say who did it.
What happened. On 30 September, Iraq marked Sovereignty Day in Baghdad. At least one parade included something done to a US flag. The Jerusalem Post calls it trampling. Iraq's government calls it an "infringement".
Who acted. The two sides do not agree.
| The Jerusalem Post | An-Nahar, carrying the Iraqi government | |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | militias "desecrate" the flag | an "infringement on the US flag" |
| Who did it | militias; its photo caption names the Popular Mobilization Forces | "the violators", with no unit named |
| Evidence shown | a screenshot from X | a statement from the prime minister's military spokesman |
| "Sovereignty" | put in quotation marks | the name of the day, with no quotation marks |
What Baghdad did. An-Nahar reports that Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi set up an inquiry. His spokesman, Sabah al-Numan, said al-Zaidi condemned the act and ordered legal action against "the violators".
What the Post argues. The Jerusalem Post says the US military has fully withdrawn. It says Iranian-backed militias "retain power" and are determined to keep their weapons.
Not settled - Which unit drove over the flag. Only a photo caption names one, and it relies on a screenshot. - What the inquiry will find, and when. - Whether the US withdrawal is complete. Only The Jerusalem Post says so. We hold no Iraqi or US account of it. - What the militias say. None of our three reports quotes them.
What this is about: whether Iraq's government or the armed groups aligned with Iran decide what happens on Iraq's streets, now that US troops have left.
How it got here. In 2003 a US-led coalition invaded Iraq and removed Saddam Hussein. US combat forces left at the end of 2011. They came back in 2014, at Baghdad's invitation, after the Islamic State group seized Mosul and much of the north and west. That same year, Iraq's leading Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, called on Iraqis to take up arms. Tens of thousands joined volunteer units, which became the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). In 2016 Iraq's parliament made the PMF part of the state's security forces. Several of its largest factions are close to Iran's Revolutionary Guard and answer to their own commanders as much as to the prime minister. After 2020, some of those factions attacked US bases in Iraq, and the United States struck back. In 2024 Baghdad and Washington agreed to wind down the US-led coalition mission in stages.
The actors. - Iraq's government, led by Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi, who is also commander-in-chief. It wants to show that the state is in charge. - The PMF and the Iran-aligned factions inside it. They are legally state forces and politically their own. - The United States, which has kept its embassy and its interests in Iraq. - Iran, the factions' main foreign backer.
What is at stake. If the government can investigate and punish an armed group over a public act, that shows the state is in control. If it cannot, it shows the armed groups still set the limits, with no US troops left as a counterweight.
Where it stands. Iraq marked Sovereignty Day on 30 September. The prime minister has ordered an inquiry into what was done to the US flag. He has named no one, and we hold no reply from the factions.
