Trump says "very negative forces" exaggerate AI risk; Anthropic's chief says the industry was not open enough
Four reports carry one afternoon's remarks. Two pass on the president's phrase, one turns it into a rates story, one gives the warning side its own sentence. None gives a market figure.
What was said. Reuters and MS NOW both carry Donald Trump blaming "very negative forces" for what he calls exaggerated concern about artificial intelligence. MS NOW adds House Speaker Mike Johnson saying the United States cannot "lose the race to China". Anadolu Agency reports the White House adviser Kevin Hassett dismissing market risks from AI safety warnings, and seeing no reason for a Federal Reserve rate rise before the midterm elections. Life.ru is the only report we hold carrying the other side: Anthropic's Dario Amodei saying the technology industry has not been open enough about the risks.
Where the accounts differ.
| Outlet | What it leads with | Attributed or stated |
|---|---|---|
| MS NOW | Trump and Johnson "downplay" the warnings; China | "downplay" is the outlet's word, in the headline |
| Reuters | the same "negative forces" phrase | quoted, with "says" |
| Anadolu Agency | no market risk, and no rate rise before the midterms | stated as the adviser's settled view |
| Life.ru | Amodei warns, in his own words | named, with title and company |
Who is not named. Neither report carrying the phrase says who the "negative forces" are. Three of the four argue against a warning without quoting anyone who made one.
Not settled. No report we hold gives a share price, an index move or any other figure for the market risk it describes or denies. Amodei's remark reaches us through one report and one sentence; no other report we hold quotes him. Whether any of this moved a market is unmeasured here.
What this is about. A public argument over whether warnings about the dangers of artificial intelligence are serious — and whether they are an economic risk worth pricing.
How it got here. Artificial intelligence reached ordinary users in late 2022, with OpenAI's release of ChatGPT. The companies building these systems have raised and spent heavily since, and their prospects are now argued over as a market question, which is why this sits with economics rather than technology. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staff, Dario Amodei among them, on the stated argument that the technology is dangerous enough to need building deliberately. It sells the systems it warns about, and those warnings are what is being answered here.
American policy has pointed the other way. Since October 2022 Washington has restricted exports of advanced AI chips to China on national-security grounds, and administrations since have kept the controls. The case against regulating AI at home follows from the same framing: rules here would hand the lead to Beijing. On 6 September 2026 we reported France 24's claim that the G20 meeting in Chapel Hill was convened to keep AI unregulated; TASS's account of the same meeting carried a trade statement and no dispute.
Who is in it. Donald Trump is the US president. Mike Johnson is Speaker of the House of Representatives, where federal legislation would have to pass. Kevin Hassett is a White House economic adviser; his remark on interest rates concerns the Federal Reserve, which sets them independently of the White House, and the midterm congressional elections due in November 2026. Amodei speaks for one of the firms any rules would bind.
What turns on it. If the warnings are credited, they become an argument for regulation and a reason for investors to reprice the companies. If they are dismissed as exaggerated, building continues unregulated and unrepriced.
Where it stands. Remarks made on one afternoon, 13 September 2026. No report we hold carries a proposed rule.

What is being argued about
- Whether warnings from inside the AI industry are a risk to markets at all
- Who the "negative forces" the president blames actually are
- Whether the Federal Reserve has reason to raise rates before the midterms
- Whether the industry has been open about what it knows
