Magyar Nemzet calls Merz's Kyiv aid 'brutal'; Welt's expert says it is 'hard German security interest', not alms
Germany's chancellor visited Kyiv on Sunday as a drone hit a bridge over the Dnipro. Four outlets led on four different things. None of the reports we hold says what the aid package contains.
What happened. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Sunday, HotNews.ro reports. That morning a drone hit the city's North Bridge over the Dnipro. HotNews.ro, Telex, De Telegraaf and De Standaard all report the strike.
What Merz said. Frankfurter Allgemeine, HotNews.ro (citing EFE) and Telex (citing MTI) all report the same appeal: Putin should stop the war. Merz said talks are possible, but only once the guns fall silent.
What the aid is: four leads, no figure.
| Outlet | Leads on | Aid size given? |
|---|---|---|
| Magyar Nemzet | a "brutális" (huge) package; opens on Russia telling foreigners to leave Ukraine | No |
| Welt | expert Nico Lange: not "Almosen" (alms) but hard German security interests | No |
| Gazeta Wyborcza | Merz: "you can count on us", and "we help also in our own interest" | No |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | Merz to Putin: stop "this senseless war" | No |
The bridge. Only Telex counts anyone hurt. It reports two injured, according to Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko. De Telegraaf's headline names a Russian drone. Its text says only that the bridge "was attacked by a drone".
Not settled. - What the package holds and what it is worth. - Whether more people were hurt. Only one report gives a figure. - Whether the strike was aimed at the visit. HotNews.ro and Telex place it at or just after his arrival. No report we hold shows that it was timed to the visit.
What this is about. Germany's head of government went to the capital of a country at war to promise help. While he was there, the war reached the city.
How it got here. In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. The same year it backed armed separatists in the eastern Donbas region. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Kyiv held, and the fighting settled along a front in the east and south. Much of the war is now fought in the air. Russian drones and missiles strike Ukrainian cities, and Ukrainian drones strike targets inside Russia. Before 2022 Germany refused to send weapons into a war zone. Since then it has become one of Ukraine's main suppliers of arms and money.
Who is involved. Friedrich Merz, of the centre-right CDU, has been German chancellor since May 2025. Volodymyr Zelensky is Ukraine's president and Vladimir Putin is Russia's. Germany is not fighting in the war. It argues that its own security depends on how the war ends, and Gazeta Wyborcza reports that Merz said so in Kyiv.
The last few days, as the reports describe them. Telex reports that Kyiv's South Bridge was hit five times in under 24 hours on Thursday and Friday. It also reports that a drone struck the building of Ukraine's academy of sciences on 28 September. On Saturday, Telex reports, Zelensky said Ukrainian intelligence had seen documents ordering wider strikes on civilian targets. On Sunday Russia's defence ministry said it would step up strikes on Kyiv, according to MTI as cited by Telex. Magyar Nemzet reports that the day before the visit, Russia's foreign ministry told foreigners and diplomats to leave Ukraine.
What is at stake. Whether Europe's largest economy keeps paying to defend Ukraine's skies. Frankfurter Allgemeine reports that Berlin and Kyiv plan to build interceptor drones together. These are drones built to shoot down attacking drones.
Where it stands. Merz offered talks, but only after the guns fall silent. No report we hold gives the size of the new aid.
